Postdoctoral fellowship

Scholarship: ca. USD 22,808.70 (or equivalence to Brazilian Real R$ 88,477.20), excellent deal for Sao Carlos City!

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral fellowship on synthetic medicinal chemistry. The fellow will join a multidisciplinary team led by Prof. Carlos Montanari at the University of São Paulo. The goal of the São Paulo Research Foundation – FAPESP themed project is the discovery of novel cysteine protease inhibitors for the treatment of Chagas disease – CD, which is caused by the flagellated protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi of the kinetoplastida order. Albeit CD is found mainly in endemic areas of South and Central Americas, in recent years, due, among others, to the phenomenon of migration, CD has been observed around the world. Chagas disease (aka American trypanosomiasis) is currently only remediable in the acute phase (hardly readily diagnosed) and the drugs used have insufferable side effects so the position represents an excellent opportunity for one to make important contributions in neglected tropical diseases (NTD). In addition, proteases are important in many signaling pathways and are potential drug targets for diseases ranging from cardiovascular disorders to cancer. While the development of new drugs to act on proteases maybe hampered by activity, selectivity, and enzyme degradation, the possibility of contributing to the therapeutic advancement of new protease drugs is challenging. We shall tackle it through the design and synthesis of peptidomimetics such as scaffold mimetics, non-peptidic mimetics and peptoids.

The candidate should have expertise in organic synthesis mostly related to synthetic medicinal chemistry.

The post is funded by FAPESP, and is available immediately for 12 months with the possibility of extension for a further 12 months. The successful candidate must have a PhD either in organic chemistry (synthesis), medicinal chemistry, or chemical biology. The workplace will be at the Medicinal Chemistry Group of the Institute of Chemistry of São Carlos, University of São Paulo, NEQUIMED/IQSC/USP, Avenida Trabalhador Sancarlense, 400, zip code 13566-590 (Latitude -22.005367, Longitude -47.898250), São Carlos/SP, Brazil.

The expiring time for applications is 11:59 pm on 24 of February 2019 and Skype interviews will be held as soon as possible thereafter, only for the selected candidates. Candidates will be required to upload a supporting statement and CV as part of application. Please apply by email to Prof Carlos Montanari (Carlos.Montanari@usp.br) including your CV and name two researchers who can offer letters of recommendation (do not attach the letters), with their respective e-mail addresses and affiliations.
