Job Details

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Bates College, a private, highly selective liberal arts college in Maine, invites applications for a one-year, full-time visiting assistant professor of chemistry beginning August 1, 2019.  Teaching responsibilities are five courses, which include one section each semester of the introductory chemistry course sequence, one section of the first-semester sophomore-level organic chemistry course, potential shared teaching of an advanced chemical synthesis laboratory, and participation in the introductory and organic teaching laboratory curricula.  The opportunity exists to mentor undergraduate thesis research projects, but this is not required.

Bates College and the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry are committed to increasing inclusivity across the campus and in the curriculum.  We especially welcome applications from all individuals with the ability to contribute to the college’s continuing commitment to social and cultural diversity and the transformative power of our differences.

Review of applications begins on February 22, 2019, and will continue until the position is filled. A Ph.D. or A.B.D in chemistry and a strong commitment to teaching undergraduates in a liberal arts setting are required.  Applicants should submit all requested materials through Interfolio at http://apply.interfolio.com/59766. Applications should include the following:

  • a cover letter that describes your interest in teaching and your qualifications for the position
  • a current CV
  • a brief statement that describes your prior teaching experience and your methods for classroom and laboratory teaching
  • graduate school transcripts
  • three letters of recommendation, at least one of which discusses qualities that will support your role as a teacher.
