Instructor or Assistant Professor – Chemistry
Northern Michigan University

 

Position: The Department of Chemistry at Northern Michigan University invites applications for an Instructor or Assistant Professor in Chemistry.  This is a campus-based, three-year term position to begin in August 2019. The Department of Chemistry has fifteen full-time faculty and offers undergraduate degrees in ACS-certified chemistry, biochemistry, forensic biochemistry, and medicinal plant chemistry.  Further information about the department can be found at http://www.nmu.edu/chemistry.  Northern Michigan University, with 7,900 students and 177 degree programs, is located along the shore of Lake Superior in the vibrant, historic city of Marquette, consistently named a top spot in the nation to raise a family, vacation, and enjoy an excellent quality of life.  See more at www.nmu.edu/marquette.

Duties and Responsibilities: The primary duties of this position will be to teach first year chemistry lecture, lab and discussion.  Teaching duties may include chemistry for science majors, liberal arts chemistry, and/or chemistry for nursing or other health students.  Other assignments are possible based on the expertise of the applicant.

Minimum Qualifications: Appointment at the rank of Instructor requires an earned Masters of Science in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Chemistry Education or closely related field; whereas, appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor requires a Ph. D. in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Chemistry Education or closely related field.  Teaching experience at the university level. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: Applicants are expected to have oral and written communication skills and time management skills.  Applicants must be committed to undergraduate education and demonstrate the potential for excellence in teaching undergraduate students.  Successful candidates must have problem-solving skills and laboratory diagnostic capabilities.  All individuals are expected to work well with an instructional team, including but not limited to fellow instructors and laboratory assistants.

Additional Desirable Qualifications:  Previous experience with assessment of general education courses and curricular design.  Willingness to participate in departmental activities.
