The National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) is looking for candidates to hold a two-year post-Doctoral position in medicinal chemistry at our Rockville-Maryland location. NCATS is one of the centers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Part of our mission is the development of new therapeutic approaches in areas of medical need. We partner with external collaborators specialized in specific disorders creating a multidisciplinary team with expertise in assay development and high-throughput screening (HTS), bioinformatics, medicinal chemistry, and disease-relevant biological models. Our aim is to produce optimized small molecules able to validate new therapeutic approaches with potential to cure or ameliorate diseases of interest.
The selected candidate will work in a highly creative environment synthesizing and optimizing potential probe molecules and preclinical candidates directed towards the discovery of new medicines to treat diseases. The incumbent will synthesize, purify, identify, characterize, and analyze (NMR, IR, MS) compounds under the supervision of a chemistry team leader. S/he will be responsible for conducting research, and advance specific programs in coordination with the team leader.
The ideal candidate should be able to work independently and be well-trained in the field of organic and medicinal chemistry. Understanding and previous experience in SAR studies and pharmacokinetic optimization/ evaluation is desirable. The incumbent will keep accurate and complete records of all scientific experiments according to established procedures, and ensure that these records and raw data are properly retained. S/he will draft technical reports, manuscripts, and patent applications and present work internally and to external consultants and collaborators as needed.

Position requires a Ph.D. degree in Chemistry with zero to three years of post-doctoral experience in organic chemistry and/or medicinal chemistry. Exceptional candidates about to complete their doctoral training will be also considered. Experience in drug discovery and optimization is desirable. The candidate should be an independent thinker and team player able to work in a very interactive high pace environment, and well trained in the methods and concepts of organic chemistry. The ideal candidate should have experience in proposing and reducing to practice multi-step syntheses. Furthermore, experience in standard spectroscopic and purification methods, including NMR (routine pulse techniques for structure determination), and standard automated liquid chromatography and HPLC methods is required.
