TB remains a serious global health problem and there is an urgent need for new therapeutic agents. We are seeking a highly qualified chemist at the post-doctoral level to conduct synthetic/medicinal chemistry in the area of tuberculosis. The successful candidate will work in a multi-disciplinary research environment, interacting with chemists, biochemists and microbiologists in a project aimed at (1) design, synthesis, purification and characterization of small molecule probes to identify novel drug targets and (2) the design, synthesis and characterization of small molecules for drug discovery.

  • Design, synthesis, purification and characterization of small molecules as candidate anti-tubercular agents
  • Design and synthesis of chemical analogs
  • Use analytical chemistry techniques/methods
  • Conduct experiments and collection of data for the research project
  • Plan, design and implement experimental plans
  • Conduct experiments and collect data for the research project
  • Work with internal and external collaborators to coordinate project activities
  • Develop, or maintain, a good knowledge of current research in the field
  • Maintain a laboratory book reporting all research conducted as part of project
  • Prepare and present papers, reports, and presentations of current research work
  • Contribute freely to the team research environment in a manner conducive to the success of the research project as a whole
  • Maintain the highest standards of laboratory practice in line with IDRI policy

Qualifications

  • PhD in organic and/or medicinal chemistry
  • Research experience in laboratory with organic and/or medicinal chemistry
  • Laboratory bench skills
  • Ability to work with hazardous chemicals
  • Ability to organize and prioritize own work
  • Ability to write papers
  • Ability to maintain good laboratory records
  • Evidence of good team working
  • Ability to work with collaborators
  • Research management skills
  • Good communication skills
