Senior Postdoc (m/f/d) Mechanical Engineering – Additive Manufacturing of Polymers

The place of employment is Teltow (near Berlin, Germany).

Fundamental and translational research at the Institute of Biomaterial Science of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht is focused on the development of polymer-based biomaterials and devices for healthcare and robotics. At current, we are looking to fill the position of a Senior Postdoc (m/f/d) Mechanical Engineering – Additive Manufacturing of Polymers – until July 1st, 2019. This will be initially a temporary assignment for two years.

Your Tasks

As a Senior Postdoc Mechanical Engineering – Additive Manufacturing of Polymers you will be responsible for

  • Polymer processing particulary by operation of 3D printers based on commercial and custom-made instrument parts (FDM, lithography, multijet, powder etc.) to obtain desired device structures
  • set-up of fabrication schemes, upscaling of production rates and/or downscaling of sample sizes
  • adaption of printing approaches to match material properties, creation of hybrid and multicomponent devices, establishing desired devise functions by single or multimaterial design; selection of materials and material combinations; characterisation of material and device properties
  • analysis of (clinical) imaging data and transfer into printable models
  • creation of 3D models to predict device functionalities in specifically designed test environments
  • training and supervision of the technical staff

Your Profile

  • successfully completed engineering degree (and PhD in engineering, e.g. mechanical engineering with PhD)
  • track record of experience in research and development in additive manufacturing in industry (>3y.) or PhD and previous postdoctoral research in the field of this call
  • hand-on skills in set-up and handling of 3D printing instruments for polymers
  • design of devices (including CAD models) and prediction of device features by computational models
  • strong background in materials science, particularly polymers for additive manufacturing
  • strong organizational and communication skills
  • fluent business language in English or German with a working knowledge of the other; international applicants are encouraged to continuously work on German language skills
  • high level of personal commitment and stress resilience
  • experienced handling of MS Office, CAD software and instrument software
