Position Description

The Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Harvard University seeks applications for a Preceptor in Chemistry. The Preceptor in Chemistry is responsible for designing and supervising laboratory experiments for undergraduate students in advanced organic, inorganic, and/or physical chemistry labs, dependent on the applicant’s area(s) of expertise. The Preceptor will also be responsible for the design and oversight of an ongoing undergraduate research project in the applicant’s field of interest, within the broadly-defined realm of experimental chemistry. In addition to laboratory teaching responsibilities, the Preceptor will collaborate will with the entire undergraduate staff to teach Chemistry 301, a teaching practicum for first-year graduate students in chemistry.

The preceptorship is a non-ladder teaching position, reporting directly to the Director of Undergraduate Studies. The initial appointment is for three years, renewable for a term of up to five years, on a yearly basis for up to eight years, contingent upon performance, curricular need, and divisional dean approval. The position may begin as early as July 1, 2019.

Basic Qualifications

Training and experience in chemical synthesis and/or experimental physical chemistry; or closely allied field.

Additional Qualifications

Superior organizational, written, and interpersonal communication skills. A strong doctoral record in organic or inorganic chemical synthesis, or experimental physical chemistry, is preferred. Experience teaching/mentoring undergraduate students in a laboratory setting is also strongly preferred.
