Department Chair – Pharmaceutical Chemistry

School of Pharmacy – University of California, San Francisco

The School of Pharmacy at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) announces a search for an outstanding leader to be Chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry.

About the School: Our faculty is advancing innovative therapeutics-related science, guiding the most creative PhD scientists-in-the-making, and preparing Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) students to think critically. We are steering the direction of research and health care delivery outside academia, working as pharmacists on health teams in groundbreaking ways, caring for patients through new approaches, and empowering patients with the information they need to make the best personal choices about medications.

The Dean’s Office, the School’s three departments and its Organized Research Unit (ORU), the Quantitative Biosciences Institute (QBI), work toward these ends in different but complementary ways:

1. The Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry explores fundamental biological mechanisms and molecules of therapeutic relevance for better health, empowered by novel technologies at the interface of chemistry, physics, and computational sciences.

2. The Department of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences explores the complex processes of biology and applies these findings and bioengineering advances to the development and rational use of precise therapeutics to improve health.

3. The Department of Clinical Pharmacy advances the precise, safe, and effective use of therapeutics to improve health.

4. The Quantitative Biosciences Institute (QBI) fosters collaborations across the biomedical and the physical sciences, seeking quantitative methods to address pressing problems in biology and biomedicine.

5. The Dean’s Office ensures the School has the strategic agenda, operational framework, and resources required to succeed.

Faculty in all three departments and QBI teach and mentor students, including those in the School's PharmD degree program and the five PhD degree programs administered by the School.

About the Department: The Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry seeks to understand the biological principles of small molecules, proteins, and cellular design, and to apply these principles for the therapeutic benefit of patients. To this end we investigate new molecular treatment targets, new and more precise ways to therapeutically alter their activity, and new biomarkers to track disease and treatment efficacy.

We also create and continually refine both the chemical biology tools and the core enabling technologies used by our own labs and others worldwide to probe and analyze structural and systems biology at the molecular level.

We educate science students in many PhD programs at UC San Francisco. We are closely involved with the five PhD programs administered by the School of Pharmacy:

• PhD in Bioengineering (BioE)

• PhD in Biological and Medical Informatics (Bioinformatics pathway) (BI)

• PhD in Biophysics (BP)

• PhD in Chemistry and Chemical Biology (CCB)

• PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Pharmacogenomics (PSPG)

We provide our Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) professional student pharmacists with the strong basic science foundation required to deliver optimal patient care.

Accomplished postdoctoral scholars are welcomed into our labs where they receive the advanced research experience they need to become leaders in their fields.

We are committed to sharing advances in our fields of study with all the students we teach.

Leadership Responsibilities: As the academic leader and administrative head of the Department, the Department Chair duties include:

• Providing visionary leadership with future-oriented thinking about the direction of Pharmaceutical Chemistry research, education and care within in the field of Pharmacy;

• Leading the formation of the department’s strategic direction and priorities to ensure the continued growth and development of the department and its faculty;

• Managing the resources required to support the department’s success and create the conditions for a high-performing and high-functioning work environment for the department’s faculty and staff;

• Recruiting, retaining, and evaluating departmental faculty and staff;

• Approving faculty appointments, merit advancements and promotions in consultation with departmental colleagues and the School’s Office of Academic Affairs;

• Administering Department-level financial, procedural, and human resource-related affairs in accordance with School and University policies;

• Engaging with the Dean, Chairs and School’s administrators to ensure the School’s continuing leadership, forging collaborations with UCSF colleagues and partners in government, business, and industry to expand the breadth and relevance of the School’s work.

Criteria for appointment:

• PhD in chemistry, life sciences, or a related field;

• Prior administrative experience preferred;

• Research in the department spans a broad range of chemical and biological sciences, including protein and cellular engineering, mass spectrometry, chemistry and chemical biology. The successful candidate must have demonstrated commitment to high-impact research within a collaborative, diverse and inclusive research environment;

• Demonstrated commitment to University P.R.I.D.E. Values; and

• Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
