Simon Fraser University (SFU), located on unceded Coast Salish Territory - the traditional territories of the Squamish (Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw), Musqueam (xʷməθkʷəy̓əm), TsleilWaututh, Katzie, and Kwikwetlem peoples, is actively building a diverse, inclusive community and invites applications for an NSERC Tier 1 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Natural Products and Chemical Biology within the Department of Chemistry, with an effective start date of July 1, 2020. This appointment opportunity is limited to candidates at the rank of Associate or Full Professor.

Tier 1 Chairs are intended for outstanding researchers acknowledged by their peers as world leaders in their fields. Please see the CRC website for details and consult the website for full program information, including further details on eligibility criteria.

The successful applicant will be expected to establish a vigorous research program that bolsters existing scientific strengths within the Department of Chemistry, and more widely across the Faculty of Science. Areas of particular interest include, for example, implementation of novel strategies for high throughput screening to identify bioactive molecules, and creation of chemoinformatics strategies for identification of bioactive compounds. The applicant will be expected to play a leading role in the development of a university core facility for high throughput screening and the design and implementation of new screening modalities within this center. SFU requires that candidates have a Ph.D. degree or equivalent, postdoctoral experience, and an established record of research accomplishment in the broadly defined area of chemical biology.

SFU seeks a chairholder with expertise in Chemistry and/or Chemical Biology. The applicant is expected to make significant contributions to research, teaching, graduate student supervision, and knowledge mobilization to the scholarly community, professional groups, the general public, and other stakeholders as appropriate, including industry, governmental and nongovernmental organizations. The preferred candidate will have a record of interdisciplinary research that demonstrates productive collaborations among researchers from chemistry and related life science disciplines.

This position is contingent upon the applicant receiving a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair; therefore, only senior investigators with outstanding discipline relevant research outputs (e.g. publication record, patents, prototypes, knowledge mobilization activities, performing arts activities, nontraditional forms of scholarship) relevant to their discipline, will be considered. The position is subject to the availability of funding and to final approval by the University Board of Governors and the Tri-Agency Institutional Programs Secretariat (TIPS). This Tier 1 CRC is tenable for seven years and may be renewed for a second term. Interested applicants are invited to review the initial appointment and chair renewal details of the CRC Program.

To apply, applicants should provide:
• an up-to-date, full curriculum vitae (include details of research and teaching, scholarly record, funding, and list of collaborations/partnerships);
• two examples of refereed published scholarly work;
• the proposed program of research (include an outline of the proposed CRC research program over seven years, an explanation of how the proposed research aligns with and advances SFU’s 2016-2020 Strategic Research Plan, and a discussion of how this Chair would strengthen graduate training at SFU (total of 2-6 pages single spaced); and
• the names and email addresses of 4-5 referees (ranked in order of preference).

SFU recognizes that alternative career paths and/or career interruptions (e.g. maternity leave, leave due to illness) can impact research achievements and commits to ensuring that leaves are taken into careful consideration. Candidates are encouraged to highlight how alternative paths and/or interruptions have impacted them in their application. SFU also recognizes the value of mentoring and research training, outreach, professional service, and nontraditional areas of research and/or research outputs; demonstrated experience in increasing diversity in the previous institutional environment, and in curriculum, is also an asset. All applications should be submitted by email to Vance Williams, Chair of Chemistry, via chemchr@sfu.ca.

Simon Fraser University is an institution whose strength is based on our shared commitments to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Diversity is an underlying principle of our Strategic Vision, which pledges SFU to “foster a culture of inclusion and mutual respect, celebrating the diversity reflected among its students, faculty, staff, and our community.” SFU is committed to ensuring that no individual is denied access to employment opportunities for reasons unrelated to ability or qualifications. Consistent with this principle, SFU will advance the interests of underrepresented members of the work force, specifically Indigenous peoples, persons with disabilities, racialized persons, and women; embrace gender and sexual diversity; ensure that equal opportunity is afforded to all who seek employment at the University; and treat all employees equitably. Candidates that belong to underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply.

SFU offers several benefits and services aimed at creating a more inclusive and accessible campus community for faculty, please see the Faculty Relations, Benefits and Service page for more details. SFU is also committed to ensuring that the application and interview process is accessible to all applicants; if you require accommodations or have questions about SFU benefits, services, accommodations policies, or equity considerations please contact the Director of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in Faculty Relations.

The competition will remain open until August 1, 2019, or until the position is filled. Any general inquiries regarding this posting may be directed to Vance Williams, Associate Professor and Chair, Department of Chemistry. Under the authority of the University Act, personal information that is required by the University Academic Appointment Competitions will be collected. For further details see the Collection Notice.
