The FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation & Research, Office of Vaccines Research and Review, Division of Bacterial, Parasitic and Allergenic is recruiting to fill a Senior Staff Fellow position to serve as a Principal Investigator in the Laboratory of Bacterial Polysaccharides (LBP). The LBP hosts a diverse group of principal investigators actively engaged in research relating to encapsulated bacterial pathogens and related model systems.  In addition to laboratory research, the candidate will perform regulatory review of licensed and investigational vaccines that target encapsulated pathogens.

The Principle Investigator (service track or tenured equivalent) will develop an independent research program in chemical biology of glycoconjugates. The research program will be within the Laboratory of Bacterial Polysaccharides with the goal of using recombinant technologies, metabolic engineering and/ synthetic biology as tools to improve the understanding of glycoconjugate vaccine synthesis and immunology.

This position will be filled through the Service Fellowship program. The appointment is for up to four years with opportunities for renewal. Appointment does not confer any entitlement to a position in the competitive service, and there is no entitlement to Merit Systems Protection Board (MSPB) appeals rights.

QUALIFICATIONS

Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree (M.D., D.V.M., etc.) with no less than 3 years of post-doctoral research experience in chemical biology, biochemistry, or a related field. The candidate will have demonstrated state-of-the-art research interests related to metabolic engineering and chemical biology of glycoconjugates, with direct relevance to development of therapeutics and bacterial vaccines; an outstanding publication record and research productivity; exceptional written and oral communication skills, with experience in scientific critique; and clear evidence of leadership potential. Applicants must also demonstrate that they meet the minimum requirements for the  Chemistry, RG-1320  occupational series to be considered.
