Primary Function: The laboratory coordinator is responsible for supervising the instructional laboratories to ensure that faculty have the materials and equipment necessary for their courses in a safe, clean, and neat environment. This includes responsibility for the supervision, training, and evaluation of student laboratory assistants. The coordinator assures that all laboratories meet all applicable safety regulations; conducts regular inspections of the laboratory facilities and immediately remediates any deficiencies; ensures that throughout the day the faculty have the materials and equipment needed to properly teach their courses; supervises the ordering of all laboratory supplies; maintain the inventory files and ensures that all chemicals are properly stored and documented; and ensures that all hazardous waste is properly collected, stored, and removed for disposal.

Typical Duties & Responsibilities: 

● Prepares and deploys all supplies, equipment, reagents, and solutions for instructional chemistry laboratories. 
● Meets with faculty instructors to discuss the overall set of experiments, the necessary chemicals and equipment, and hazardous waste collection needs.
● Provide accurate and precise preparation of large quantities of stock solutions to ensure successful student experiments, proper chemical storage for students’ use during laboratory sessions, and processing of waste.
● Serves as the departmental purchasing agent for all chemicals, equipment, supplies, and services. Initiates purchase orders and fills out invoice approval forms. Assists in overseeing the departmental budget. 
● Assists faculty with tasks related to the effective operation of science facilities including consulting and coordinating with Facilities Management staff in relation to building, plumbing, and electrical servicing, additions, and repairs. 
● Hires, trains, and supervises work-study students (prep room workers and laboratory assistants). Coordinates timesheets and payment for work-study students.
● Responsible for laboratory check-in/check-out procedures.
● Maintains a chemical stockroom by keeping it well organized, frequently inventoried and well stocked. Evaluates chemical stock for aging. 
● Manages shipping and receiving packages for the department. 
● Coordinates hazardous waste disposal.
● Coordinates safety training for students enrolled in chemistry courses, student workers in laboratory settings, and summer research students.
● Coordinates scheduling of outside vendors for instrument calibration. 
● Maintains student safety agreements. 
● Maintains first aid kits in laboratory spaces. 
● Maintains safety data sheets on each chemical reagent in stock. Maintains alcohol permit status. 
● Maintains broken glass boxes. 
● Maintains water filtration systems. 
● Ensures that all eyewash and safety shower devices receive weekly testing. 
● Works to ensure a safe chemical environment per adherence of Department and University safety protocols. 
● Regularly organizes all laboratory spaces and equipment within the department.
● Able to move equipment weighing up to 40 pounds for various classroom and laboratory needs.
● Perform other duties as assigned.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.

Experience: 1 to 3 years of wet chemistry laboratory experience.

Job Related Skills: 

● Must have, or be willing to acquire soon, training for Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and be willing to attend other necessary/useful training related to the position (such as first aid training). 
● Strong time management, organizational, problem-solving, and project management skills. 
● A commitment to, experience with, and the ability to work effectively with a broad spectrum of individuals from a variety of diverse backgrounds. 
● Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, and database software, including Google Drive with Windows and Mac operating systems.
● Proficiency in laboratory management software (Quartzy) and electronic laboratory notebook software (LabArchives).
