The American Chemical Society Division of Membership & Society Services is the entity primarily responsible for recruiting, retaining, and recognizing membership. Developing and implementing the programs, products, and services that support members are our most critical role. With more than 150,000 members worldwide, providing an integrated suite of benefits that meet current and potential member needs is critical to the future of the Society. The Department of Member Programs & Communities is composed of five staff teams: (1) Component & Career Services, (2) Award and Member Recognition Programs, (3) Virtual Programs, (4) Industry Member Programs, and (5) Diversity Programs.

 

Position Summary

The Assistant Director leads the Industry Member Programs team that focuses on providing greater value to ACS members working in industry.  The incumbent is be responsible for understanding the needs of individual industry chemists, and developing and maintaining effective relationships with senior industry executives. Using that information and those relationships – along with other inputs - the incumbent will be responsible for assessing the value industry derives from existing ACS programs, products and services (PPS). Subsequently, the incumbent will lead a team focused on increasing the value ACS provides to industry and ultimately, the number of ACS industry members. This position reports to the Director, Member Programs and Communities.

 

Position Accountabilities

  • Has primary accountability for ACS engagement with industry.
  • Leads the development and execution of short-term and long-term plans designed to provide meaningful value to ACS members (and other stakeholders) employed in industry. Responsible for creating new value for industry members.
  • Serves as the Society’s primary point of contact with senior industry executives. Develops and maintains productive relationships with these executives and other senior leaders in relevant organizations such as associations, NGOs, etc.
  • Leverages these relationships to better understand the needs of industry chemists, to seek out partnerships that support the Society’s goals in this area, and ultimately, to better serve ACS industry members.
  • Leads the IMP staff unit, and directly manages two staff.
  • Contributes to the integration/leveraging of programs, products and services across M&SA, as well as other divisions within ACS, to accomplish the goals of Industry Member Programs.
  • Coordinates with Corporation Associates, industry roundtables, and other governance groups to advance the interests of industry leaders and the chemists they employ.
  • Organizes meetings for ACS senior leadership and executive leadership in industry. These meetings may target CEOs, CTOs or similar level executives in industry.
  • Participates in chemical industry dinners/award events.

 

Required Experience

Degree in chemistry or chemical engineering required, advanced degree preferred. 8+ years of related experience serving in middle/senior management in chemical industry or other directly related field, such as pharmaceuticals, energy, materials, etc. Extensive experience in developing, implementing, and monitoring strategic plans. At least 5 years of experience managing direct reports. Excellent communications skills. Excellent analytical skills. Demonstrated judgment and interpersonal skills to operate successfully in a complex working environment comprised of staff, governance and external stakeholders. Project management experience is a plus. Must have computer skills, including Microsoft Office and Outlook. This position requires approximately 25 travel days per year.
