The DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY AND BIOCHEMISTRY at DENISON UNIVERSITY invites applications for a tenure-track position at the ASSISTANT PROFESSOR level in Physical or Analytical Chemistry, starting Fall 2020.  Successful candidates will demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching at the undergraduate level and the capacity to develop a research program that recruits and engages undergraduates in publishable research. Preference will be given to candidates whose research interests expand the diversity of research opportunities available to our students.  Teaching responsibilities will include introductory chemistry, physical chemistry, and other upper level classes including an advanced course in the candidate's field of expertise. Preference will be given to a candidate with the ability to teach both physical and analytical chemistry.  The successful candidate will be expected to teach on average 9 contact hours per semester which includes both classroom and laboratory instruction.  Denison faculty are also expected to contribute to campus governance and participate in the life and continued growth of the broader campus community.  Our college is committed to attracting and supporting an academically and culturally diverse faculty; preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate a commitment to foster a classroom and research environment that engages students from diverse backgrounds.  Individuals who identify as traditionally underrepresented in STEM disciplines are especially encouraged to apply.  A Ph.D. is required (by the first day of appointment), and research/research mentoring experience after completion of the Ph.D. is preferred.

Denison University is an increasingly diverse, highly selective, and nationally ranked residential liberal arts college located in Granville, Ohio, 30 minutes east of the Columbus metropolitan area (experiencecolumbus.com).  Our ACS-accredited department has ten full-time tenure-track faculty, well-developed programs in both chemistry and biochemistry, excellent classroom and laboratory facilities, and a broad range of instrumentation that is used in both teaching and research (denison.edu/academics/chemistry-biochemistry/laboratory-equipment).  See our website (denison.edu/academics/chemistry-biochemistry) for more detailed descriptions of our program.  Denison supports research and teaching with substantial laboratory start-up funds, generous professional development opportunities, a semester-long pre-tenure leave, and readily-available summer research student support.  For details on Denison-sponsored faculty benefits see denison.edu/forms/faculty-handbook.

To achieve our mission as a liberal arts college, we continually strive to foster an academically and culturally diverse campus community which recognizes the value of all persons regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or socio-economic background. For additional information and resources, please see our Diversity Contact List at denison.edu/forms/diversity-guide.  Denison University is an Affirmative Action, Equal Opportunity Employer.

Applicants should submit a cover letter addressing their motivations for teaching at a small, residential, liberal arts college, curriculum vitae including a publication list, undergraduate and graduate transcripts, and separate statements addressing their: 1) teaching philosophy, including the ability to contribute to our curriculum, 2) research plans (a ~5-page summary), and 3) actionable ideas to foster and support diversity in our department and college.  These materials and three letters of recommendation should be submitted online at https://employment.denison.edu. To assure full consideration, completed applications must be received by September 27, 2019.
