The Research Safety Program is responsible for all research related environmental health and occupational safety at BU and BMC research and teaching laboratories. The program develops, implements, and maintains safety resources in accordance with federal, state and local laws and requirements on Hazard Communications and other applicable regulations, standards, and best practices. The program assists the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), Laboratory Safety Committees (LSC), and the Institutional Animal Use and Care Committee (IACUC) with the development and implementation of policies and guidelines for working with hazardous materials in research and collaborates directly with the IBC and LSC on policies and procedures under the Biosafety and Chemical Hygiene Plan manuals. The program employs the Senior Specialist to coordinate and oversee safety activities for each department and schools assigned to. The position works closely with the faculties and staffs they are assigned to in order to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations; provides consultation in the design of safe research experiments and laboratory facilities; implement and verify adherence to safety policies and procedures on behalf of the IBC, LSC, and other safety committees; conduct comprehensive laboratory inspections, risk assessments, and monitor departmental activities involving the use of hazardous materials including but not limited to infectious biological substance, recombinant DNA, chemicals, hazardous and toxic gases, controlled substances; with particular focus on chemical hygiene and high hazard chemicals; and participate in the campus-wide emergency response program; provide safety training to campus personnel.
Required Skills
Minimum 3 years of related experience, Degree (BA, BS, or MS) in Biomedical Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, Life Science, or Health & Safety. Proficient with computer related office programs including Microsoft Office, one to three years of related experience in EHS Safety, or laboratory, or both. Familiarity with the laboratory environment, handling of chemicals and hazardous gasses, use of standard lab equipment, safe handling and proper disposal of hazardous materials. Ability to respond to emergencies on campus during off hours, including weekends and holidays as part of the on-call emergency response team. Must have or obtain the 24 or 40-hour OSHA hazardous waste operations and emergency response training. Must be able to work independently and in a team environment, good verbal and written communication skills, able to work with different organizations within the academic community as well as outside regulatory agencies. This position requires completion of a pre-placement physical questionnaire, on-site physical, medical surveillance, CORI background check.
