The Department of Chemistry and Life Science at the United States Military Academy (USMA), West Point, NY seeks an experienced Instrumentation Specialist. The successful candidate should be committed, focused, detail-oriented, able to collaborate well with other staff members with a shared vision, and demonstrate excellent organizational communication and leadership skills. Primary job responsibilities include the procurement, maintenance, operation, and training for an extensive collection of research grade analytical instrumentation. Duties include supervising one chemist and two laboratory technicians, in addition to assisting in laboratory instruction and participation in a variety of research projects.

Preferred qualifications:

  • In-depth knowledge and extensive hands-on experience in conducting various chemical assays (e.g. atomic spectroscopy, molecular spectroscopy, Fourier Transform nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, thermogravimetry and calorimetry analysis, microscopy, and chromatography)
  • Demonstrated ability to work with students, post-doctoral researchers, and other research scientists from both academia and/or industry.
  • A strong record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences.
  • Expertise in regulatory guidelines and practices for safe handling of chemicals and equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

A PhD degree in chemistry, biochemistry, materials science, or a closely related discipline is preferred. Applicants should have a strong track record of academic achievement and supervisory experience in a laboratory environment.
