Introductory Chemistry Coordinator

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) seeks candidates for the position of Coordinator in the Introductory Chemistry sequence. The successful applicant will coordinate all aspects of the curriculum and operation of the undergraduate courses and laboratories in the Introductory Chemistry sequence in the Department, including current and planned efforts in on-line instruction in these classes.  Anticipated rank is at the Instructor or Assistant Professor level, depending on experience.

UAB has outstanding core facilities in the molecular sciences (including EM, MS, and X-ray), engineering, nanoscience, imaging, informatics, as well as translational and clinical research.  The Department of Chemistry is home to the Central Alabama High Field NMR Facility. The UAB Cyclotron Facility is housed in the School of Medicine and produces radiopharmaceuticals and radioisotopes for medical imaging and other studies. The Department of Chemistry offers B.S. (ACS-Approved), M.S., and Ph.D. degrees, and has major research interests in drug discovery, structural biochemistry, biophysical chemistry, nanoscience, and polymer/advanced materials.  The Department currently has 16 faculty members, more than 300 undergraduate majors, 40 PhD students, and provides extensive teaching service to the University at large.  UAB is dedicating significant resources towards its science infrastructure in the next few years, with a new Science and Engineering Complex breaking ground in 2020.

This position is a 9-month, full-time, non-tenure earning, career-track appointment.  The position is renewable annually subject to performance and funding availability.  Duties include:

  • Coordinating the administrative operation of all Introductory Chemistry lectures and laboratories.
  • Operation, maintenance, and continued development of on-line courses in this sequence.
  • Training, scheduling, and supervision of teaching assistants.
  • Teaching at least one lecture section on-campus each semester.
  • Collaboration with chemical education faculty in curricular development.
  • Closely working with stakeholders at UAB outside the Department.

A Ph.D. in Chemistry or closely related area is required. The successful candidate must have teaching experience.
