The Department of Chemistry at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) seeks candidates for the position of Coordinator in the Upper Division Chemistry sequence. The successful applicant will coordinate all aspects of the curriculum and operation of the upper division undergraduate courses and laboratories in the Department, as well as assisting in instruction in undergraduate courses.  Anticipated rank is at the Instructor or Assistant Professor level, depending on experience.

UAB has outstanding core facilities in the molecular sciences (including EM, MS, and X-ray), engineering, nanoscience, imaging, informatics, as well as translational and clinical research.  The Department of Chemistry is home to the Central Alabama High Field NMR Facility. The UAB Cyclotron Facility is housed in the School of Medicine and produces radiopharmaceuticals and radioisotopes for medical imaging and other studies. The Department of Chemistry offers B.S. (ACS-Approved), M.S., and Ph.D. degrees, and has major research interests in drug discovery, structural biochemistry, biophysical chemistry, nanoscience, and polymer/advanced materials.  The Department currently has 16 faculty members, more than 300 undergraduate majors, 40 PhD students, and provides extensive teaching service to the University at large.  UAB is dedicating significant resources towards its science infrastructure in the next few years, with a new Science and Engineering Complex breaking ground in 2020.

This position is a 9-month, full-time, non-tenure earning, career-track appointment.  The position is renewable annually subject to performance and funding availability.  Duties include:

  • Coordinating the administrative operation of all upper division laboratories in the Chemistry Department.
  • Operation and maintenance of chemical instrumentation.
  • Training, scheduling, and supervision of teaching assistants.
  • Instruction in the undergraduate laboratory sequence.
  • Teaching at least one large class section in the Department each semester.
  • Aid in the development of on-line course materials for chemistry laboratories.
  • Close collaboration with Chemistry faculty in curricular development.

A Ph.D. in Chemistry or closely related area is required. Successful candidates should have experience in undergraduate instruction, experience in laboratory design and maintenance, and/or experience in operation and maintenance of chemical instrumentation. Experience with online education, including curricular development and pedagogy, is desirable.
