Job Details

Overview: The Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS) and the Center for Structural Molecular Biology (CSMB) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) are jointly seeking a staff scientist to work in the area of chemical synthesis for neutron studies in the field of biological applications. CNMS provides user community access to expertise and equipment for nanoscience research, including nanomaterials synthesis, nanofabrication, imaging/microscopy, and computation. It acts as gateway for the nanoscience community to benefit from ORNL’s neutron sources and computational resources. The CSMB supports the user program for the biological small-angle neutron scattering (Bio-SANS) instrument at the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), and the bio-deuteration laboratory for production of labeled biomolecules at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS).

Through this joint appointment between CNMS and CSMB you will develop a leading program for the synthesis of deuterated molecules, including de novo synthesis and hybrid biological as well as synthetic approaches for neutron scattering experiments that will be conducted using state-of-the-art techniques and facilities available at HFIR and SNS. Your own research will tie closely to the scientific activities within the CSMB. A key component of your role is user support, which includes growing the user program in the area related to your own research, user assistance as local contact, helping with experimental setup, and experiment design and execution. You will have the opportunity to work with users on a wide range of science topics relevant to the biological neutron scattering program at SNS and HFIR.

This position reports to the Macromolecular Nanomaterials Group, CNMS, Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD), at ORNL.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Pursue a high-quality personal research program in chemical deuteration for biological applications, build national and international collaborations, and publish research results in scientific journals.
  • Attract users from new areas of research, and areas related to the topics of your own research efforts. You will champion developments in custom synthesis of compounds labeled with stable isotopes for biological neutron scattering experiments
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements
  • As a member of the ORNL scientific community, you will be expected to commit to ORNL's Research Code of Conduct. Our full code of conduct, and a statement by the Lab Director's office can be found here: https://www.ornl.gov/content/research-integrity.

Basic Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. in organic chemistry with an emphasis on chemical synthesis, or a related discipline
  • A minimum of 2 or more years of relevant chemical synthesis experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in lipid, detergent, and peptide synthesis
  • Previous experience with NMR, mass spectrometry, IR spectroscopy, and chromatographic separations
  • A working knowledge of small-angle scattering and other biophysical characterization tools
  • Demonstrated ability to work with graduate students, post-docs and researchers from academia and industry
  • Self-motivated, have good interpersonal and communication skills, and should have demonstrated the ability to interact effectively with research staff at all levels
  • A strong record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team

Special Requirements:

  • Provide a current curriculum vitae including a list of publications when applying for this position
  • If you are selected for interview, you will be required to send in a minimum of three letters of reference
