Loyola University Chicago (LUC), College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor Rank in Biochemistry, Bioinorganic, or Computational chemistry, to commence in the fall of the 2020-21 academic year. The Department offers Ph.D., M.S., and ACS-approved BS degrees. For more details about the department, visit http://www.luc.edu/chemistry.

The selected candidate will be expected to maintain an internationally competitive, externally funded research program and participate in undergraduate- and graduate-level teaching. Candidates whose research is based in the laboratory will contribute to teaching the biochemistry or inorganic chemistry portions of the curriculum (based on the candidate’s preference and expertise), while those whose research is computational will primarily contribute to the physical chemistry curriculum. In addition to teaching and pursuing their own scholarship, candidates are also expected to involve undergraduate students in research and to engage in service for the department, college, and university.

Applicants should have a PhD in chemistry and have completed at least one postdoctoral appointment. Applicants from all areas of biochemistry and bioinorganic chemistry will be considered. Candidates for the position must demonstrate the potential for classroom instructional excellence and a strong ethic of student mentorship or provide evidence of such capacities. In addition, candidates also must be willing to support the mission of LUC and the goals of a Jesuit Catholic Education.

Preferred Qualifications: Evidence of significant scholarly activity in both the prior doctoral and postdoctoral positions is preferred. Preference will be given to candidates whose research record and interests focus on fundamental aspects of biochemistry at the bench or by using computational approaches.

Applicants must submit a current Curriculum Vitae, a research plan, a teaching statement, and a cover letter to www.careers.luc.edu. They also must provide the names and email addresses of three individuals to provide reference letters that speak to the candidate’s professional qualifications and potential for this position. Referees will not be contacted immediately but will be at a subsequent stage in the applicant review process. Written inquiries about the position can be sent to gmoran3@luc.edu or to the address below.

Loyola University Chicago is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer with a strong commitment to hiring for our mission and diversifying our faculty. The University seeks to increase the diversity of its professoriate, workforce and undergraduate and graduate student populations because broad diversity – including a wide range of individuals who contribute to a robust academic environment – is critical to achieving the University’s mission of excellence in education, research, educational access and services in an increasingly diverse society. Therefore, in holistically accessing the many qualifications of each applicant, we would factor favorably an individual’s record of conduct that includes experience with an array of diverse perspectives, as well as a wide variety of different educational, research or other work activities. Among other qualifications, we would also factor favorably experience overcoming or helping others overcome barriers to an academic career or degrees.

As a Jesuit Catholic institution of higher education, we seek candidates who will contribute to our strategic plan to deliver a Transformative Education in the Jesuit tradition. To learn more about LUC’s mission, candidates should consult our website at www.luc.edu/mission/.
