DEPARTMENT HEAD IN THE DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY AT THE CITADEL

The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, Department of Chemistry invites applications for Department Head, a 10-month, tenured faculty position at the Full Professor level, beginning July 1, 2020. Located in beautiful Charleston, South Carolina, The Citadel is a fully accredited, public, comprehensive, co-educational college with a student body of 2900 undergraduate and 900 graduate and professional students and has been recognized as the #1 public Master’s-level University in the South for the last nine years according to US News & World Report. The Citadel supports faculty scholarship through internally-funded research, development, and travel grants. The Chemistry Department offers an American Chemical Society-approved B.S. degrees in Chemistry and Biochemistry as well as a B.A. in Chemistry.   The department is comprised of 8 tenure/tenure track faculty, several adjunct instructors, and two staff members.  The department is highly committed to undergraduate research for all students. Position Responsibilities:

As a senior military college, The Citadel has a unique military tradition and a mission to educate and train principled leaders. Working with the Dean of the Swain Family School of Science and Mathematics, the Department Heads activities include:

  • administrative duties and key responsibilities in the areas of faculty development and mentoring;
  • performance evaluations of faculty and staff;
  • program planning and assessment;
  • development and implementation of departmental policies and programs;
  • management of department operations and budgets;
  • development of stakeholder relationships within and outside the institution.

The Department Head receives additional remuneration for administrative duties performed and is expected to be available during at least one month of the summer semester. Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate courses in chemistry in the area of expertise as well as 100 level chemistry courses/laboratories. The normal teaching load for the Department Head is 6 contact hours per week with typical class sizes less than 30 students. 

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum qualifications include an earned doctorate in the area of organic or inorganic chemistry; a commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and service; and a record of successful administrative leadership and departmental management. Applicants must be committed to sustaining a robust research program that can engage undergraduate students.
