Instrument Chemist

The James Madison University Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry invites applications for a full-time instrument chemist beginning August 25, 2020.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and keep functional the instruments used by the faculty of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry including but not limited to an x-ray diffractometer, FTIR spectrometers, Agilent LC/MS spectrometers, gas chromatographs, optical microscopes, ICP mass spectrometer, UV/visible spectrometers, and other lab equipment. Prior experience working with many of these instruments is desirable, but the ability to learn new instruments and operational software is critical.
  • Train undergraduate students in the use of instruments and assist them with research projects.
  • Assist the faculty when using these instruments for instructional and research purposes.
  • Assist visiting scientists, including those from local organizations, who use these instruments.
  • Work with staff in the various departments and the Center for Materials Science when needed to order supplies, repair parts, or repair services for the facilities.
  • Supervise and train TAs for organic instructional labs and for the preparation of chemicals, other materials, and instruments for these labs.

Qualifications:

We seek outstanding candidates with an M.S. in physics, chemistry or closely related field, or three years of related experience. Candidates with an earned Ph.D. are encouraged to apply. The chemistry department is housed in a state-of-the-art facility and has approximately $8 million of modern instrumentation including 3 Agilent LC/MS spectrometers, a JEOL TOF mass spectrometer, a PANalytical x-ray diffractometer, and 300, 400, and 600 MHz Bruker NMR spectrometers. The chemistry department at JMU currently serves about 180 undergraduate chemistry and biophysical chemistry majors and offers a wide variety of courses for these majors, other science majors, general education, and pre-health professional majors. The department offers an ACS-certified degree with tracks in biochemistry, chemical education, chemistry, and materials chemistry. A general BS degree and a degree with a concentration in business are also offered. The research interests of the 25 full-time faculty members span all disciplines, with faculty and students participating in a variety of externally funded research programs. We mentor over 100 undergraduate student researchers during the academic year and in the summer.
