Assistant Professor position in Organic Chemistry beginning Fall, 2020.

Qualifications: The Department of Chemistry at Alma College invites applications for a tenure- track assistant professor position in Organic Chemistry. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in chemistry or related field at the time of appointment; postdoctoral experience desired. The department has some preference for candidates with expertise in organic chemistry at the interface of materials science or biology. Candidates for faculty positions should enjoy teaching a wide variety of courses and be committed to undergraduate liberal arts education, promoting student success, and contributing to the broader life of a thriving campus community.

Teaching Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be expected to teach in the department’s two semester sequence of organic chemistry lecture and laboratory, as well as other courses that meet departmental and institutional needs. Other courses could include CHM115 (Introductory Chemistry: Chemical Analysis), CHM103 (Basic Chemical Investigations), upper-division courses in the major, CHM411 (Advanced Organic Chemistry), and courses in the college’s general education program. All members of the department also participate in the instruction of the capstone Senior Seminar (CHM 450) during the Winter Term. Departmental members regularly collaborate with colleagues in biochemistry, biology, physics and environmental studies programs, and the institution encourages broader inter-disciplinary teaching and engagement. The normal annual teaching load is six units per year.

The Department of Chemistry: The successful applicant will become part of an ACS certified program of seven chemists. The faculty has a deep commitment to quality liberal arts education; student development in a residential setting; student research and experiential learning; ethical and values dimensions of learning; and interdisciplinary, intercultural and international education.

Facilities: Departmental laboratories have good ventilation and hood space, and are arranged in suites with adjacent instrumentation labs. Instrumentation includes: 400 MHz multinuclear FT- NMR, GC, GC/MS, FT-IR, microwave synthesizer, HPLC, IC, AA, UV-VIS, ITC, FPLC, glovebox, and computer workstations with Spartan electronic structure software.

Application: Submit a letter of application, CV, a statement of teaching philosophy, and a research plan description indicating opportunities for supporting and promoting student research. Three letters of reference should be sent separately. All application materials should be submitted to Julie Elenbaas, Science Secretary, elenbaas@alma.edu. Review of applications will begin November 1 and continue until the position is filled.
