Organic Chemist
With nation-wide responsibility for improving the health and well-being of all Americans, the Department of Health and Human Services oversees the biomedical research programs of the National Institutes of Health and those of NIH’s research Institutes.
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) is looking for an experienced synthetic organic chemist to work within the Imaging Probe Development Center (IPDC). The Imaging Probe Development Center of the NIH is a core facility to supply otherwise unavailable molecular imaging probes to collaborating scientists. The candidates must have a PhD in organic synthesis or medicinal chemistry and at least two years of post-doctoral research. The ideal candidate will have expertise in total synthesis of complex natural products, or synthetic method development as demonstrated by scientific publications. Prior experience with medicinal chemistry is of interest. Knowledge of modern synthetic techniques and expertise in common analytical methods are expected.
The chemist will synthesize small molecules for diagnostic imaging applications, or early drug discovery efforts. The focus of the research will involve the synthesis of small molecules as new chemical tools for biologists and includes compounds for targeted protein degradation, and MRI, optical or PET imaging. Experience with or knowledge of fluorescent dyes, chelates for radioactive metals, MRI agents and nanoparticles is beneficial. The work will require the ability to devise synthetic approaches to target molecules and propose alternative synthetic routes. The candidate should have good communication skills and be able to work in a collaborative environment, within a service group.
