Chemistry Education Specialist – RTA, Lecturer

The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry at James Madison University (JMU), a primarily undergraduate institution (PUI), invites applications for a full-time, 10-month Chemical Education faculty position beginning in August 2020. The appointment fills a new permanent faculty line at the rank of lecturer (non-tenure track) with renewable-term appointments. Pay is commensurate with experience. For more information about the department and its faculty, please visit our website at https://www.jmu.edu/chemistry//

The Department is in the process of redesigning the curriculum for lower division undergraduate laboratories, primarily in general and organic chemistry. The Department feels strongly that STEM majors are best trained by actively engaging them in the process of science. Therefore, the new curriculum employs innovative project- or research-based laboratories in which student teams develop and execute their own experiments. The ideal candidate will work with a team of faculty to develop these laboratories and, most importantly, to develop and test assessment instruments that measure students’ process skills. The JMU Center for Assessment & Research Studies (https://www.jmu.edu/assessment/) is a resource for assessment-related project. Currently, the department serves ~2000 undergraduates in general chemistry and organic chemistry laboratories each academic year.

The successful candidate will teach lower division laboratories, primarily general chemistry I & II. Outside the laboratory, the hire will train undergraduate teaching assistants and mentor undergraduate research students in assessment-related projects. It is expected that scholarly work will be presented at conferences and published in peer-viewed journals. Departmental funds are available for travel. The hire will also work with faculty to continue development of innovative laboratories that expose students to extensive chemical instrumentation ($8M) and manipulation of large data sets while investigating real-world problems. In addition, the successful candidate will support faculty who teach the laboratories, uphold departmental safety standards and utilize LabArchives, an electronic laboratory notebook. On-going professional development is encouraged. JMU’s Center for Faculty Innovation (https://www.jmu.edu/cfi/) offers year-long workshops related to teaching and scholarship.

A Ph.D. in chemical education. science education or equivalent with expertise in the assessment of student learning is required. Post-doctoral experience is preferred. The ideal candidate will further our development of lower division laboratories and assessment instruments. This requires the ability to effectively collaborate and communicate (both orally and in writing) with undergraduates, faculty and administrators. This includes the ability to write project proposals for IRB approval. The successful candidate will also demonstrate teaching excellence at the undergraduate level and a commitment to fostering an equitable and inclusive learning environment.

To apply visit http://joblink.jmu.edu/postings/6400 or go to JobLink.jmu.edu and reference posting number F1375. Candidates will complete the faculty application and attach the following: (1) cover letter, (2) curriculum vitae, (3) statement of teaching philosophy and (4) a copy of unofficial graduate transcripts. The teaching philosophy should address how the candidate will work to create an inclusive learning environment. The names and contact information for three references will be requested as part of the application.
