Job Details
As manager of the Process Simulation and Safeguards group, provide technical direction for R&D focused on the treatment and disposition of nuclear materials, and administrative support to the group and division. Specific tasks include: (1) coordinating activities related to modeling, simulation, and testing of chemical processes, (2) directing the development, design and fabrication of chemical process equipment, and (3) providing technical support to sponsors, other laboratories and R&D organizations. Serve as a technical expert for the division in the areas of nuclear chemical engineering, process modeling, nuclear safeguards, and aqueous separations. Make significant technical contributions in the fields of nuclear chemical process design and equipment development. Interact with sponsor organizations to understand technical direction, provide advice, and assist in establishing programmatic goals. This activity will be particularly important with respect to supporting the laboratory strategic goals in the areas of separations science, separations modeling and simulation, and nonproliferation. Responsible for developing research initiatives through writing research proposals, and building relationships within Argonne, with sponsors, and with other research organizations.
Qualifications:
Considerable: Knowledge of general principles of chemical engineering, chemistry, and materials science. Knowledge of aqueous separation principles, particularly as applied to spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste management. Knowledge of computer-aided process modeling and design. Experience in managing personnel and resources effectively, and in mentoring subordinates. Skill in the presentation of ideas and results, and in the preparation of reports and proposals.
Good: Knowledge of experimental laboratory methodology and safe work practices including those with radioactive materials. Understanding of the production of high-level waste forms. Understanding of pyrochemical and high-temperature processes.
Other: This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal education in chemical engineering at the Ph.D. level with 11-15 years of experience or equivalent in the scientific application of this knowledge and practical laboratory experience. The position requires US citizenship and that the candidate possess or apply for a security clearance.
