2 Positions are currently available at the US Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, N.Y.:

The Mission of the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) is to educate, and graduate leaders of exemplary character who are inspired to serve the national security, marine transportation, and economic needs of the United States as licensed Merchant Marine Officers and commissioned officers in the Armed Forces.

The Academy, one of the five Federal Academies, is a degree granting institution fully accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.  Upon graduation, the Midshipmen (male and female) are awarded Bachelor of Science degrees, licensed as Merchant Marine Officers by the U.S. Coast Guard and are commissioned as Officers in the U.S. Reserves or Active Duty Military Service.  Located on the North Shore of Long Island in Western Nassau County, it is one of the world’s foremost institutions in the field of maritime education and consists of 82 acres of waterfront land including a Museum, library and fitness/recreational facilities available to both faculty and staff. 

These positions are ideal for highly motivated, experienced professionals who have the academic credentials and background in Chemistry to teach college age students.

  • You must be a U.S. citizen and meet all the education, specialized experience and selective factor requirements for consideration.
  • This position is a Federal Government Excepted Service appointment.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment background investigation is required.
  • Relocation expenses will not be paid.

1) Instructor (Chemistry Laboratory) Full-time

This is a Full-Time Faculty Tenure-Track appointment in the Excepted Service, with an initial appointment not-to exceed 06/18/2022. Reappointments to additional one or two year appointments are possible.  If Tenure is achieved (after four to six years), employment will be made permanent, provided a satisfactory performance appraisal is received. The appointee will serve as an instructor for laboratory classes of instructional Chemistry courses.  He/she will also exercise responsibility for setting up the apparatus and/or safely preparing chemicals for each of the General Chemistry and Chemistry for Marine Engineers experiments, put out and store the apparatus needed for each of the Physics 1, Physics 2 and Physics 3 experiments, exercise responsibility for the accurate preparation of standard chemical solutions with precise normality and molarity specifications using gravimetric and volumetric procedures, exercise responsibility for maintaining chemicals in a safe manner, maintain and repair equipment, and serve as the property custodian and assist in purchasing activities for the department.

Applicants must have a minimum of a Master’s degree in experimental Chemistry from an accredited college or university and a minimum of one year full-time experience teaching freshmen level college Chemistry or Chemistry Laboratory courses other than as part of an assistantship and experience conducting experimental work in a chemistry laboratory. 2) Instructor (Adjunct) Part-Time / Intermittent

 Excepted Service appointment with an Initial Term Not-To-Exceed 13 months; however, each year with a satisfactory performance appraisal, the appointment may be extended for an additional year. The position is that of an Adjunct Chemistry Instructor in the Department of Mathematics & Science, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, N.Y.  and staff. 

The appointee will tutor and intermittently teach courses in General Chemistry and Chemistry for Marine Engineers.  The incumbent will tutor twice per week in the evening in each trimester of the academic year. He/she will also teach classes during daytime hours as staffing needs dictate. Teaching assignments are expected to be made in at least the first four trimesters. Applicants must have a minimum of a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in an applicable subject area and a minimum of one year of college teaching or tutoring experience.  Applicable subject areas include, but are not limited to, Chemistry and Biochemistry.
