Scope
 

The Senior Chemist will be responsible for conducting reaction optimization, developing robust processes, scale-up, and delivering high quality chemical intermediates.  The ideal candidate will be skilled in the art and practice of modern industrial chemistry, and have demonstrated technical proficiency in performing sensitive chemical reactions, isolations, separations, purifications and crystallizations.  Experience at scale-up and an aptitude for problem solving are required.  In this position, you are expected to provide laboratory-based leadership and be a role model for the scientific/technical community in the company by effectively managing technical details and providing sound scientific opinions.  This role demands a commitment to safety and a commitment to conduct work with the highest ethical standards.  This role does not involve pharmaceutical multi-step synthetic chemistry.


Essential Job Functions

  • Lead various laboratory and pilot scale projects focused on development of new chemical manufacturing processes or improvement of existing processes that produce products such as organic chemicals or polymers.
  • Perform all work with high regard for the safety of yourself and others.
  • Work diligently to anticipate and meet the needs of our customers, ranging from small start-up companies to large, international chemical manufacturers.
  • Communicate frequently with customers to develop experimental plans, discuss results, and propose appropriate next steps.
  • Offer technical expertise and guidance for various applications.
  • Prepare written reports or presentations for customers, potential customers, patent applications, scientific articles, and conferences.
  • Work productively both independently and in a multi-functional team setting of chemists, engineers, and technicians.

Required Education

  • Doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in organic chemistry or related field.

Required Skills

  • Strong understanding of organic chemistry, including knowledge of the chemical composition, structure, and properties of substances and of the chemical processes and transformations that they undergo.  This includes uses of chemicals and their interactions, danger signs, production techniques, and disposal methods.
  • Knowledge of scientific research methods and experiments and ability to advise other chemists performing chemical and physical testing.
  • Clear understanding of experimental design.
  • Strong communication, organization, and planning skills.
  • High level of technical aptitude and creativity.
  • Skilled at analytical methods such as HPLC, GC, MS, NMR, IR, UV-Vis, DSC, and TGA.
  • Familiarity with applicable regulatory guidance desired but not required.

Required Experience

  • 2+ years related experience in industrial organic chemistry.
  • Hands-on experience in process chemistry and scale-up from gram to multi-kilo quantities.
  • Proven track record in identification and optimization of safe, scalable routes that focus on product quality.
