Job Details

The University of Pennsylvania is looking to hire a Managing Director of the Vagelos Integrated Program in Energy Research (VIPER).

Under limited supervision from two Faculty Directors, the Managing Director of the Vagelos Integrated Program in Energy Research (VIPER) enjoys broad responsibility for the administration of all aspects of this joint program between the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) and the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS).

The focus of this highly competitive program is to prepare students to be leaders in the development of efficient methods of production, conversion, and use of energy. VIPER students begin with a common educational experience in their first year that includes a dedicated first-year seminar and an “on-ramp” to research that equips students to engage in research and create new knowledge.  Students become involved in energy-related research through paid summer research experiences and a senior capstone experience.

Specific responsibilities of the Managing Director include the following:

  • Providing academic advising to students (~20 per class) and help them with course planning to meet the requirements of both of their degrees
  • Develop and match students with research opportunities that are a core component of the program
  • Manage events such as guest lectures, seminars, and annual student poster session.
  • Work with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions in the recruitment and admission of prospective students
  • Oversee the creation and maintenance of program publications and website.
  • Assist business office in onboarding students into payroll and monitor students’ hours during their summer research experiences
  • Work with EHRS to ensure students receive necessary lab safety training
  • Assist with maintenance and development of content for VIPR 120/121 and assessment of student work in these courses
  • Evaluate student work and research summaries for assignment of VIPR 399 credits.
  • Conduct some purchasing; work with business office and/or Concur system for other purchasing and reimbursement requests.

The Managing Director reports to two Faculty Co-Directors (one each from SAS and SEAS).
