Assistant professor Sustainable Chemistry & Catalysis

Job description

Contribute to a catalysis-oriented research program that aims to contribute to society’s sustainability and circular economy challenges

The Department of Chemistry at Utrecht University in the Netherlands is renowned as a world class center of excellence and innovation in both research and education, fully resourced and equipped with state-of-the-art technological platforms.

Sharing positivity
Our approach is characterized by a connected, open and can-do spirit that stimulates personal initiative and curiosity. You are encouraged to take ownership and create value while sharing your knowledge both internally and across the wider (global) research community. As an organization we strive every day to enable this mission because we know it is the only way to make the breakthroughs that will help to solve the challenges facing the world.

We focus on two core areas of fundamental research – life science and sustainability – within two outstanding research pillars:

  • The Bijvoet Center advances our understanding of life at the most detailed molecular level by using cutting-edge structural and analytical methods in combination with state-of-the-art molecular biology, biochemistry as well as biophysical methods.
  • The Debye Institute for Nanomaterials Science tackles sustainability through research into catalysis, nanostructures and colloids, and nanophotonics.

Qualifications
A chance to play your part

Working within the Debye Institute for Nanomaterials Science and in the Organic Chemistry and Catalysis group of the Department of Chemistry, we have an opening for a tenure track assistant professor. We are looking for an ambitious candidate with a strong background in molecular chemistry aiming to build an active and internationally recognized research line in the field of sustainable chemistry and catalysis. Potential topics include:

  • new homogeneous or heterogeneous catalyst materials and (electro)chemical conversion processes for chemical building blocks synthesis from renewable or circular feedstock, including via biomass or waste valorization and chemical recycling.
  • new organic and/or hybrid organic/inorganic materials for innovative ways of energy storage or chemical conversion or other smart (polymeric) materials applications.
  • Research on closing the element loops in a circular economy.

Your research has the potential to yield important benefits in terms of more efficient and sustainable raw material and energy use and improving the CO2 footprint and general sustainability of chemical processes. In doing so, you fulfill your personal development goals while adding to our reputation of scientific excellence.

Your background and the position
You have a PhD in (homogeneous or heterogeneous) catalysis, sustainable chemistry, or (inorganic or organic) materials, an excellent track record, and the experience necessary to take your place within an international research and education environment. Your own research interests are found within the broad fields of catalyst development for sustainable chemistry, (electro)chemical conversion and energy storage, and chemistry in a circular economy. You combine scientific excellence with an open-minded and collaborative mindset in research and teaching and will contribute enthusiastically to the acquisition and execution of externally funded projects. You act as an outward looking ambassador for Utrecht University, able to communicate your knowledge to the next generation and across networks. We are particularly interested in hearing from female scientists for this position.
