The University of Illinois at Chicago, Department of Pharmacy Practice, Infectious Diseases and Antimicrobial Pharmacokinetic/Pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) Laboratory of Dr. Eric Wenzler seeks a full-time Visiting Research Specialist position in the area of antimicrobial pharmacology. The laboratory primarily aims to identify antimicrobial combinations with activity against super resistant, difficult to treat Gram negative bacteria. This is accomplished through antimicrobial susceptibility testing, in vitro PK/PD models such as time-kill and onecompartment analyses, and pre-mammalian in vivo experiments, among other techniques. The UIC College of Pharmacy, ranks sixth among the more than 130 pharmacy programs in the United States. Researchers within the UIC College of Pharmacy include internationally-recognized leaders in clinical pharmacokinetics for antimicrobials, biomolecular sciences, alternative medicine, biotechnology, cancer biology, and pharmacology. The College of Pharmacy is strategically located in the 560 acre Illinois Medical District, which is home to four major hospitals and one of the most diverse patient populations in the country. Expertise, collaboration, and research tools necessary for completion of the various research activities in Dr. Wenzler’s Laboratory can be readily accessed at UIC and the hospitals in the Illinois Medical District.

 

Duties: The successful candidate will be responsible for the following duties:

 Collaborate with principal investigator to develop, prepare, and execute research projects including, but not limited to, the following: infection models, susceptibility testing, and antimicrobial resistance experiments

 Collect and document high-quality results and data that correspond to the research objectives

 Maintain updated experimental protocols outlining equipment setup, data collection and data evaluation

 Contribute material, prepare results, and assist in writing up findings

 Organize and prepare daily research activities

 Maintain well-organized laboratory space

 Monitor and maintain lab inventory

 Guide, train, and advise lower level researchers and students on techniques, methods, and procedures

 

The candidate would also have the opportunity, if interested, to engage in the following:

 Performing result analysis

 Performing statistical analysis

 Preparing abstracts/posters

 Preparing manuscripts

 Assisting with grant preparation

 

Qualifications: Candidates must possess at least a bachelor’s degree in science or related field and have at least 3 years of research-related experience. A master’s degree in a science related discipline is preferred. Candidates must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and be highly motivated to work independently. Priority will be given to those that have significant experience working in a bacteriology/microbiology lab, are self-driven, organized, and can demonstrate proficiency in various lab techniques. Additional expertise in molecular biology, in vitro PK/PD models and/or animal infection models, and/or LC-MS is ideal.
