As a Associate Research Chemist, you will work with research associates and research scientists across multiple disciplines to develop project objectives and work plans to advance grape, wine and spirits chemistry. You will perform a wide variety of advanced analytical tasks requiring deep subject matter expertise, technical knowledge and relevant work experience, especially in the area of wine macromolecules research. This position supports Research Applications by facilitating scale up and commercialization of scientific breakthroughs in the area of grape, wine and spirits chemistry.

What You Will Do

  • Study the linkage between grape and wine chemical composition and wine sensory attributes
  • Develop cutting edge techniques and analytical methods to quantify key grape and wine metrics related to wine quality and consumer preferences
  • Work collaboratively with research and winemaking/spiritsmaking production partners on projects of major interest to the wine industry

What You Need

  • High School Diploma or State-issued equivalency certificate
  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Food Science, Biochemistry or Fermentation Science plus 7 years of wine, food, pharmaceutical or environmental laboratory experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibility or Master’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, Food Science, Biochemistry or Fermentation Science plus 5 years of wine, food, pharmaceutical or environmental laboratory and research experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibility
  • Five years of research experience in one of the specific chemistry area listed: organic acids, aroma compounds (free and volatile aromas), color and mouthfeel compounds (anthocyanins, phenolics and related compounds), or macromolecules (carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and nucleic acids), including the operation of relevant analytical instruments for their analysis
  • Candidates for this position must have a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record. Required to obtain a California driver’s license or appropriate state driver’s license within 30 days of hire
  • Required to work non-traditional and extended hours at the site wineries during harvest
  • Required to lift and move up to 50 pounds

What Will Set You Apart

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Fermentation Science or Food Science plus 9 years of wine, food, or environmental laboratory experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibility; or a Master of Science degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Food Science plus 7 years of wine, food, or environmental laboratory research experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibility
  • Seven years of research experience in one of the specific chemistry area listed: organic acids, aroma compounds (free and volatile aromas), color and mouthfeel compounds (anthocyanins, phenolics and related compounds), or macromolecules (carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and nucleic acids), including the operation of relevant analytical instruments for their analysis
