Research Scientist (Organic or Medicinal Chemistry)

Responsibilities

  • Design and execute synthesis and characterization of small molecule macrocycles, intermediates and building blocks to support internal and collaborative drug discovery and development efforts
  • Assist in the design of molecules and conduct appropriate synthetic follow-up studies to optimize bioactivity obtained in support of internal and collaborative programs
  • Multi-step synthesis (7-12 steps) of new molecules and analogues of lead candidates (milligram to gram scale) individually or in a library format
  • Design and multi-step synthesis (3-5 steps) of fragments to be incorporated into macrocyclic and other molecules (gram to kilogram scale)
  • Purification (flash chromatography, HPLC, crystallization, distillation) and analytical characterization (NMR, IR, LC-MS) of aforementioned molecules and fragments
  • Design and evaluation of alternative synthetic routes for construction of target molecules
  • Design and construction of focused and targeted chemical libraries for screening in selected biological target systems utilizing parallel synthesis techniques
  • Design, synthesis and evaluation of new building block components for macrocyclic molecules and assessment of their suitability for use in library construction as required
  • Development of route optimization strategies and schemes to permit larger scale synthesis of molecules and fragments
  • Design and evaluation of new synthetic processes and improvement of existing procedures to support advanced compound development
  • Acting as a technical resource for other scientific staff members
  • Synthetic procedure preparation and presentation of results internally and externally, including at major scientific conferences
  • Supervision of junior scientific staff members and ensuring that they perform to an expected level
  • Planning work for self and direct reports and completion of tasks on schedule
  • Maintain up-to-date records for all work performed and ensure a safe workplace

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Organic or Medicinal Chemistry with a concentration in organic synthesis, including experience with multi-step organic synthesis, with industry experience preferred, or M.S. in Chemistry with five or more years relevant experience
  • Parallel synthesis and/or solid phase synthetic experience are considered a plus
  • Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, flexibility
  • Proven track record of scientific achievement, as demonstrated by successful R & D accomplishments and peer-reviewed publications
  • Dedication, attention to detail, ability to work in an interdependent team
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Very good computer proficiency including standard office programs, electronic lab notebooks, use of chemical structure drawing programs, presentation preparation and database searching
