Job Details
Job Description:
Creighton University invites applications for an instrument specialist position within the chemistry department. The selected candidate will; (i) perform all required maintenance for instructional and research instrumentation, including replacing dewars/gas cylinders, troubleshooting minor instrument issues, diagnosing major equipment failures, initiating and coordinating service/repairs with manufacturer representatives, (ii) maintain teaching laboratory computers, including the upgrade/installation of operating systems and scientific software as needed, (iii) instruct both undergraduate and graduate students on the proper use of department instrumentation for research purposes, (iv) assist with developing new experiments for undergraduate teaching laboratories and instruction of select upper-division laboratories (with full responsibilities, occasionally, for one or two sections), (v) research and become familiar with emerging methods and techniques for instrument use in support of research activities, (vi) assist with planning and implementation of some departmental outreach activities.
Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree in chemistry, biochemistry, materials science, or physics is required along with an advanced degree in a similar or related field, M.S. considered; Ph.D. preferred. Applicants with advanced degrees in unlisted, but related, fields will be considered. Five (5) years’ experience related to the job duties listed preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Expertise with one, or preferably more, of the following: optical spectrometers (UV-Vis, IR, fluorescence, microplate readers, etc); chromatography instruments (GC, GC/MS, HPLC, etc.); NMR, mass spectrometry, and laser-equipped instrumentation. Expertise in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), computer programming, and computer operation systems including Unix, Windows, Mac that interface with laboratory instruments. Ability to multi-task while maintaining high standards and attention to detail. Excellent verbal and written skills required.
