The Department of Chemistry at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, a Hispanic-Serving Institution with an enrollment of over 32,000 students and recently awarded an R2 Carnegie Classification, invites applications for a full time Department Chair – Associate/Full Professor with an expected start date of January 1, 2021. The UTRGV Department of Chemistry is committed to cultivating and preserving a culture of inclusion and diversity. The successful candidate will lead the department to be the premiere chemistry program in the Rio Grande Valley, with a world-class reputation earned by delivering an outstanding education and cutting-edge research training to students and providing opportunities for professional growth and community engagement to all members of the department.
The department currently has 16 tenured/tenure-track faculty members and 10 lecturers distributed over its two main campuses in Brownsville and Edinburg. Faculty research programs include all traditional areas of chemistry, as well as interdisciplinary work in medicinal chemistry and materials science. The department is currently home to nearly 250 undergraduates and 40 graduate students pursuing BS and MS degrees in Chemistry, a BS in Chemistry leading to teacher certification, and minors in Chemistry and Biochemistry. Department faculty are also active participants in a new MS program in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry. These research and teaching activities are generously supported by an internal endowment and by a long-standing departmental grant from the Robert A. Welch Foundation.
The chair is expected to inspire and support faculty, staff, and the predominantly Hispanic student population; foster an environment of collegiality, teamwork, respect and diversity; interact with all stakeholders to determine the priorities and direction of the department; support the expansion of the research capabilities of the department while maintaining excellence in teaching; increase the national recognition of the departmental programs; and advocate for the department within UTRGV. As a faculty member, the chair will also be expected to teach a reduced load and participate in research and service activities.

Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. in Chemistry or a related field, and will have demonstrated leadership abilities in administration, personnel management, and budgeting. Also, the successful candidate must meet the requirements for tenure and appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.

The successful candidate will have an excellent track record in research and teaching.

Preferred Qualifications

The successful candidate will have excellent people skills and an administrative philosophy grounded in the belief that diversification and shared governance are foundations for academic success. Also, the successful candidate will have experience working with and mentoring students from underrepresented backgrounds.

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.

The Department of Chemistry has 21 tenured and tenure-track faculty members, 10 lecturers, and 5 support staff thoughtfully engaged in the chemical education of university, elementary, middle school, and high school students spanning the Rio Grande Valley. We are committed to providing quality education, serving the community, and preparing students for graduate work or careers in chemistry by offering programs that lead to bachelors (B.S.), masters (M.S.) or minors in chemistry. Additionally, the Department of Chemistry prepares students for admission to schools of dentistry, pharmacy, and medicine. We provide undergraduate, graduate, and high school students with research opportunities supervised by faculty mentors that are experts in areas such as organic, inorganic, environmental, physical, analytical, computational, polymeric, and materials chemistry.  Our department receives generous funding to support research from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the Welch Foundation, and the Elliott Chemical Society.

The Department of Chemistry is located in the Science (SCNE) building on the Edinburg campus and the Life and Health Sciences (LHSB) building on the Brownsville campus. Our department houses the modern chemical instrumentation required to conduct innovative research publishable in national and international peer-reviewed journals. We have dedicated laboratories for teaching, community engagement, and for students to conduct experiments for coursework or to explore focused research projects mentored by inventive faculty.
