The Research Specialist will manage the Microanalysis facility including personnel supervision, instrument maintenance and service contracts, user training, and be chief analyst in the facility. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Running elemental analyses on both organic and inorganic materials and similar micro analytical techniques, methods development; Point of contact for the microanalysis Lab for all internal and external customers and vendors. Coordinate all maintenance and purchasing of lab equipment. Responsible for all billing and ordering of supplies and equipment; Supervise microanalysis lab staff; hire, train, assign work, approve schedules, and do performance evaluations and improvement plans. Provide mentoring of personnel in lab protocol, experimentation methods, and project assignments; Train walkup users in the standard operating procedures for TGA, DSC, 3Flex BET, and microcalorimeter; Monitor sample submission software. Evaluate timely completion of job orders. Evaluate, prioritize and adjust workflow, including staff responsibilities, to ensure most efficient and accurate analysis of sample; Implement new technologies and innovations into facility, with the permission of Faculty Advisor, School Director and Executive Committee, when the scientific necessity and financial means are present; Keep abreast of changes and innovations in the field of elemental analysis. Attend conferences and trainings to ensure the work of the facility is at the cutting edge of science. Organize training and encourage staff to attend conferences for the same.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required: Master’s degree in Chemistry or a related field; Two years' experience in ICP emission (both OES and MS), ion chromatography, CHN analysis, TGA/DSC spectrometer and selected wet chemical methods;

Preferred: PhD in Analytical Chemistry or a related field; Four years' experience in ICP emission (both OES and MS), ion chromatography, CHN analysis, TGA/DSC spectrometer and selected wet chemical methods. Supervisory experience, preferably in a lab setting. Experience with surface area and sorption experiments.

SALARY AND APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

This is a full-time academic professional position appointed on a 12 month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
