Directs the College of Pharmacy’s shared instrumentation resources and support for approximately 40 research faculty, 130 graduate students and post-doctoral researchers and technicians, and various undergraduate and professional students occasionally engaged in laboratory research experiences. As needed, collaborates and consults on electronics diagnosis, repair and modifications; and consults with various members of the computing support group for guidance or support of instrumentation data system operations and interconnections. Maintains, calibrates, and services shared instrument hardware and software platforms for optimal service to research and graduate teaching missions including NMRs, mass spectrometers (LC-MS and GC-MS), FTIR, CD/ORD, qPCRs, HPLCs, flow cytometer, microscopes, spectrophotometer, plate readers and other equipment along with the associated software; anticipates obsolescence and develops enhancement strategies then engages in and submits intramural and extramural funding proposals to implement the same. Consults and advises various pharmacy personnel on proper operation of instrumentation and design and execution of experimental regimes on these instruments; typically will also collaborate on experimental strategies of all sorts in numerous areas related to, but not in the charge of, the Director. Takes lead responsibility for methods, scope and implementation of training of new users of the shared facilities as well as the continual monitoring and advanced training of more experienced users; likewise is responsible for the coordination of access to shared equipment, scheduling of instrument time, and adjudication of issues of equitable access among users and groups. Collaborates with various research personnel in the preparation of manuscripts for publication and proposals for grant applications for new or upgraded equipment and resources. Manages and oversees instrumentation support staff. Serves as liaison to similar facilities both in and outside of OSU toward the planning and sharing of short- and long-range support and development strategies.

Required Qualifications: 

Master’s degree in chemistry or a related discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience; considerable demonstrated success in a progressively responsible management capacity including direct experience in the occupation(s) supervised and strategic or long-range planning experience.

Desired Qualifications:     

Ph.D. or equivalent experience in chemistry or related discipline, with particular emphasis on spectroscopic methods of structure determination, with particular emphasis on small molecules; several years hands-on experience with instrument operation and upkeep; variety of experiences with computer systems and data acquisition considerations very desirable. Requires successful completion of a background check.
