Job Details

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Southwestern University seeks applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Chemistry specializing in biochemistry to begin in August 2021. Southwestern University is a selective liberal arts institution with an innovative American Chemical Society (ACS) certified program and new state-of-the-art facilities for scientific teaching and research. The department is committed to using a range of pedagogical approaches that support our goal of creating a learning environment that promotes equity and inclusion for our students.

Excellence in teaching is the central criterion for faculty evaluation at Southwestern, and the typical teaching load is 3-2, totaling five courses per academic year. Teaching responsibilities for this position include upper-level biochemistry courses (lecture and lab) along with general chemistry, chemistry for non-majors, and courses within the university’s general education program. The successful candidate must be committed to undergraduate teaching and demonstrate a dedication to inclusiveness and fostering the success of racially and economically diverse student populations in both the classroom and laboratory.

Faculty are also expected to maintain a research program that results in peer-reviewed professional achievement and significantly incorporates undergraduate students. All research areas will be considered for this position but particular consideration will be given to candidates whose research explores questions within the realm of biochemistry and complements current research within the chemistry department.

The successful candidate will also be expected to actively contribute to university and departmental service, participate in academic advising and retention initiatives, and exhibit a dedication to equity and inclusiveness. In line with Southwestern University’s commitment to diversity, the department is especially interested in attracting and hiring candidates from underrepresented groups and those with a demonstrated ongoing commitment to enhancing racial diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM.

Southwestern University is an undergraduate liberal arts institution located in Georgetown, Texas, 28 miles north of downtown Austin. Southwestern enrolls approximately 1500 students and maintains a student/faculty ratio of 12 to 1. The University is strongly committed to supporting interdisciplinary learning as well as high impact experiences such as undergraduate research. Additional information concerning the University can be found at our website: www.southwestern.edu.

To apply: A PhD in chemistry, biochemistry, or related field within chemistry is required by August 2021. We will consider applicants who have already completed their Ph.D. as well as those who will complete their degree by the hire date. Applicants should submit the following materials through Interfolio: (1) a cover letter addressing your interest in teaching at an undergraduate institution; (2) a curriculum vitae; (3) a statement of teaching philosophy (no more than 3 pages) that summarizes your goals for student learning as well as the methods you will use to help students achieve them; your teaching philosophy must also explicitly address how you will create an inclusive learning environment that fosters an equitable experience for students traditionally underrepresented in STEM disciplines; (4) a concise (no more than 3 pages) overview of your proposed research program that highlights the role of undergraduate involvement; (5) a graduate transcript (unofficial transcripts are acceptable); and (6) three letters of reference. Applications will only be accepted through Interfolio at apply.interfolio.com/80962. Email and paper applications will not be accepted. The entirety of the interview process will be conducted virtually.

For full consideration, applications should be received by January 19, 2021. Review of applications will occur on a rolling basis and continue until the position is filled.
