ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE/FULL PROFESSOR - AI/MACHINE LEARNING: CHEMICAL ENGINEERING
The Department of Chemical Engineering at Northeastern University invites applications for a new tenure or tenure-track position. We seek outstanding candidates at all levels whose research utilizes computational systems, artificial intelligence, and/or machine learning to address global challenges in chemical processing & intelligent manufacturing. Complex systems research has been identified as a future growth area within our department. Interdisciplinary research on Artificial Intelligence is part of the University’s strategic vision, supported by initiatives such as: the Institute for Experiential AI, funding research fellows in bioinformatics, biomaterials, environmental sustainability, and precision medicine; and Northeastern’s Roux Institute in Portland, ME, which supports graduate education and research in computer and data sciences, digital engineering, and life sciences. Northeastern faculty have access to Discovery, a high-performance computing resource housed in the Massachusetts Green High-Performance Computing Center (MGHPCC) in Holyoke, MA.
The appointment will be in a tenure-track line of open rank. Our faculty support and mentor new faculty hires. All junior candidates will be assigned senior faculty mentors to advocate for the candidate’s professional development. Northeastern’s ADVANCE Office of Faculty Development offers additional resources and affinity groups for faculty across the campus to support a healthy work-life balance.
Faculty responsibilities include: advising students, developing and teaching Chemical Engineering courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels, developing an externally-sponsored, nationally and internationally recognized research program, and being involved in service to Northeastern and the profession. It is expected that each faculty member supports an inclusive environment both within their research laboratory and in their classrooms.
Successful candidates must have a doctorate degree in Chemical Engineering or a closely related discipline from an accredited institution by the appointment start date. Senior-level candidates must have a demonstrated record of funded and collaborative research, recognition for accomplished teaching, and a track record in supporting or leading efforts for inclusion and diversity. Junior applicants should demonstrate the ability to develop an innovative, externally funded, and collaborative research program. As education is a cornerstone of our Department, candidates should describe their experience and ability to engage trainees both in and out of the classroom, including their plans for using technology.

The Department of Chemical Engineering (che.northeastern.edu) at Northeastern University comprises a diverse chemical engineering faculty with a demonstrated commitment to inclusion. The department consists of 23 tenured/tenure-track faculty, of whom 35% are women and 52% have been recognized with Young Investigator awards; four full-time teaching faculty with pedagogical scholarship; four co-operative education coordinators; five staff; and 13 faculty with affiliated appointments. The Department has active research programs spanning energy & sustainability, materials & nanotechnology, healthcare, and complex & computational systems. Faculty within the Department have fruitful collaborations with various hospitals, universities, companies, and research facilities in the greater Boston area that add to the vibrancy of our program and training of our students. The departmental spirit is collegial and engaged. The department is home to approximately 125 graduate students and 475 undergraduate students. Experiential education is a hallmark of our program, with nearly 300 undergraduate and graduate students completing co-ops in the past year.
