The Department of Chemistry at the University of North Texas invites applicants for a post-doctoral teaching and research position at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor. This non-tenure track position will be for one year with the possibility of renewal for up to two additional years, with a planned start date of September 1, 2021. The primary responsibilities of the position include components of both research and teaching. Research responsibilities include conducting chemistry education research to explore the way undergraduate students interpret, understand, and use chemistry representations. The candidate will closely collaborate with the PI of the Chemistry Education Research Group at the University of North Texas, Dr. Molly B. Atkinson, and will be supervised by the Department Chair. Teaching responsibilities include teaching one course section each Fall and Spring semester within the Department of Chemistry at the undergraduate introductory level (either general or organic chemistry, depending upon the candidate’s expertise and departmental needs).

Minimum Qualifications:

The candidate should have received their Ph.D. from an accredited institution in chemistry, chemistry education, science education, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated expertise in both quantitative and qualitative chemistry education/science education research methods
  • Experience with and/or interest in the method of eye tracking in chemistry education research
  • Record of publication in chemistry education and/or science education
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including ability to work/collaborate with others
  • Interest in training/mentoring graduate and undergraduate chemistry education research students
  • Demonstrated success and/or dedication to excellence in teaching introductory undergraduate chemistry

Our department has a strong tradition of collaborative and interdisciplinary research that is strongly integrated with the education of undergraduate, Master’s, and doctoral students, and has historically had an active Chemistry Education Ph.D. program. Although this program has been dormant in the recent past, the Department of Chemistry is currently in a revitalization phase of Chemistry Education at UNT. Our faculty view this program as a key component of our strategic plan to grow and diversify interdisciplinary research in our department.
