This senior level individual contributor provides functional leadership within a laboratory or studio setting for running a laboratory. Typically this position runs small labs independently in order to support research and other academic endeavors by effectively utilizing resource allocation and planning for labs or studios. This position staffs the lab, orders, maintains, and oversees setup of equipment, maintains safety protocols and handles most other administrative and operational needs in support of the lab.

The Department is relatively small, having 17 research and instructional faculty members. With approximately 60 undergraduate chemistry majors and about 40 graduate students, there is significant interaction between students and professors. We offer bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees, as well as a 5 year BS/MS program in forensic chemistry. This position is responsible for the overall maintenance of the Chemistry labs and provides ongoing oversight of department budgets and work study students.

Responsibilities:

• Supervises Foreman Stores and student assistants.

• Purchases, requisitions and receives supplies, materials and chemicals for the teaching and research laboratories. Verifies charges; keeps statistics on usages and costs. Works with vendors to review new products. Utilizes University Procurement systems (EAS and IBUY). Submits PCard reports and supporting materials.

• Maintains an electronic inventory of supplies, materials and chemicals. Maintains electronic inventory of shared equipment in the teaching and research laboratories. Supports the University Fixed Assets reporting process and inventories.

• Administers the Chemical Hygiene Plan. Serves as the Chemistry Department Safety Officer. Interfaces with the University Office of Health and Safety; assures compliance with all safety regulations and requirements. Maintains knowledge of OSHA and NFPA regulations. Handles packaging of materials for shipment.

• Interfaces with University Offices, Departmental Vendors and Service Providers. Responds to requests from University offices; oversees maintenance issues for labs; works with facilities on emergency and minor maintenance issues as they arise.

• Responsible for the issuance of materials, supplies, chemicals and small equipment. Distributes materials, supplies, chemicals and small equipment to the operating teaching and research labs in conjunction with staff.

• Acts as a primary resource for shared department instrumentation; create/maintain basic, general operating procedures for introductory training of researchers and graduate students; ability to troubleshoot and repair minor issues is preferred; liaise with service technicians as required
