Job Description

Plans, organizes, directs, performs and supervises overall management of multiple concurrent complex, multi-stage research projects involving cardiovascular disease across multiple institutions and/or companies to ensure thorough articulation of project scope and control of expectations, deliverables, outcomes, issues, needs and constraints involved to achieve optimal stakeholder satisfaction resulting in regulatory approval.

Essential Duties

Research Responsibilities: Develop research program and perform analysis of complex datasets to include genomic, serologic, endocrine, remote sensor data, electronic health records from patients with congestive heart failure, and cardiac diseases. Responsible for publishing results of research in your area of expertise. To develop and manage a laboratory that expands the department’s capability in these areas of research. To expand your research lab by obtaining grant funding from appropriate organizations. 

Program Management Responsibilities: Manages the day-to-day operational and tactical aspects of multiple large-scale projects in cardiovascular disease by creating complete task definition, work requirement identification, and mapping. Provides interaction and support on ASU’s behalf with research partners; may be the primary point of contact for sponsored projects, attend meetings and asked to present meeting materials, reports, charts, etc. Builds institutional capability in project and program management by providing mentoring to others, engage with scientific task leaders and junior project managers through formal channels; assesses training needs and selects training tools for team members. Assists in development of policies relating to project and program management. Works closely and collaboratively with key stakeholders to define project scope, strategy, budget, and outcomes; identifies critical resource expertise and targets appropriate internal and/or external sources to ensure optimal outcome(s). Establishes and continually monitors/manages project expectations with team; assigns tasks and identifies issues for resolution to ensure optimal team effectiveness. Prepares and maintains all project status reports and schedules; tracks milestones/deliverables, critical paths and dependencies; re-sets expectations as needed in consideration of project progress/outcomes. Responds to all inquiries regarding project status; prepares and responds to all regulatory reporting/filings to ensure compliance. Manages, coaches, and supervises all project team members both internal and contracted to ensure optimal outcomes; builds, develops, and maintains relationships vital to project success. Works collaboratively with Principal Investigator(s) to engage leadership, associated scientists and other research related staff to define and identify all required project infrastructure including, but not limited to: space, build/reconfiguration of laboratory facilities, equipment, technology and instrumentation to ensure timely availability for successful launch and ongoing project operations. Prepares all post-project reports, budget allocations and summaries/filings to ensure timely dissemination of information to all interested parties. Works collaboratively to establish and maintain positive working relationships with outside organizations, other universities, and ASU faculty to provide technical assistance, materials, services, and other resources. Manages the development of project teams by ensuring that project tasks are in line with skills, interests and abilities of individuals. Reviews high-level deliverables for adherence to budget, time and resource requirements; identifies out of scope and/or other obstacles to successful achievement of objective(s). Organizes and leads necessary project team training efforts for all facets of the project and consults with management to coordinate training and monitor observation efforts, as well as discuss noted findings. Oversees the evaluation of effectiveness of programs/projects to develop and implement the goals and objectives including: improved methods of program/project delivery; evaluation methodology design and implementation including analysis of results and takes or recommends proper action based on outcomes. Establishes and maintains liaison with regional, state or national organizations as appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications

Doctoral qualification (PhD, MD, or DVM) and 5-years’ experience in large research project management in academia, bio industry, government or healthcare organizations in one or more areas of the biological sciences, biomedicine, bioinformatics, sensor technologies, molecular diagnostics, precision medicine, digital health and remote patient monitoring and related experience in strategic planning, program planning and execution and familiarity with public and private sector funding agencies; OR, any equivalent experience from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.

  • Experience leading a research laboratory in one of the areas relevant to the department.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of cardiovascular disease.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of large-scale databases as they apply to biomedical research, advanced bioinformatics/analytics and biomedical remote sensor technology.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of processes for dissemination of results through presentations, reports, and publications.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of processes to conduct needs assessments.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the principles, methods and techniques of process/quality improvement.
  • Experience in planning, budgeting, implementing and evaluating projects.
  • Experience in designing training materials and presentations to meet needs assessed.
  • Evidence of effective verbal and written communication.
  • Experience in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships and establishing and facilitating work teams.
  • Experience in effectively communicating relevant project/practice information to superiors and peers in other practices.
  • Experience in challenging others to develop as leaders while clarifying roles and responsibilities.
  • Experience in evoking creative and innovative thinking from team members while helping them to bring their ideas and career plans to fruition.
  • Experience in developing proposals for external funding of projects.
  • Experience in handling difficult personnel situations directly, using appropriate discretion, HR advice, and respect for the individual.
  • Experience in implementing training, session reviews, and follow-up procedures.

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse.
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
  • Occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 50 pounds.
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
  • Clearly communicate to perform essential functions.

Department Statement

The Institute for Future Health (IFH) is a joint venture between Arizona State University (ASU) and the University of Arizona (UA) to redefine healthcare. The IFH will be a research and clinical hub to integrate the convergence of biomedicine, engineering and computing for innovation in precision health and digital health and their dependence on proficient capture, analysis and use of rapidly expanding large-scale data. Inter-disciplinary project teams from both universities and clinical and corporate partners will develop new sensor and wireless platforms for remote monitoring of health status, interactive telemedicine and the application of cognitive computing in patient care to improve diagnosis, monitor treatment adherence, reduce hospital readmissions and maintain wellness.
