Instructional Professor (open rank) in Chemistry
The University of Chicago invites applications for the position of Instructional Professor (open rank) in the Department of Chemistry. The selected candidate will be appointed as Assistant Instructional Professor or Associate Instructional Professor. Rank and length of initial term depend on qualifications. The terms and conditions of employment for this position are covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and the University.
The Department of Chemistry is looking to continue its programmatic and educational excellence in preparing undergraduate students for careers and future study in the chemical sciences. Initial instructional responsibilities include teaching courses at the general chemistry level as well as for our advanced physical chemistry courses. In addition, it is envisioned that in the future the successful candidate for this role will also be asked to propose and design course materials for additional courses not part of this initial assignment. Additional duties also include contributions to the effective functioning of departmental programs of instruction, including program development and/or coordination of our general and physical chemistry sequences. Time is allocated for professional development.
A Ph.D. in Chemistry or a closely related field as well as at least one year experience teaching in a selective college or university as an instructor of record.
Preference will be given to candidates whose training and experience make them qualified to teach undergraduate courses and develop course materials in one or more of the following areas: general chemistry and experimental physical chemistry.
A complete application consists of (1) curriculum vitae, (2) statement of teaching philosophy, including a history of courses taught, (3) three or more letters of reference, at least two of which should address teaching ability.

We also welcome materials on relevant experience with developing and managing a program of instruction, program development and/or coordination, syllabi and pedagogy development, and organizing educational conferences and workshops.
