The incumbent is a Research Chemist in the Pollinator Health in Southern Crop Ecosystem Research Unit (PHSCERU) and Southern Pollinators Health Center (SPHC) in Stoneville, Mississippi. This new Research Unit will focus on how to improve both honey bee and native bee health as well as improving natural habitat and minimizing risk to stressors including pesticides and pests in a way that is beneficial to both beekeepers and farmers. This position will provide exciting opportunities for professional growth while contributing to and shaping the future direction of this newly formed unit.

The incumbent is independently responsible for conducting research to (1) Determine new spray formulations to mitigate spray drift and prevent honey bees from pesticide risks in southern cropping systems; (2)  Develop laboratory bioassays and field studies to identify thresholds of primary factors including chemical dosage, active ingredient, droplet size that influence behaviors and migrations of bees and pollinators; (3) Study the reaction of residual insecticides and volatile compounds on bees and pollinators and their interaction with other chemical agents and weather conditions; (4) Identify the thresholds of factors that affect bee health and forage habitat; (5)  Initiate collaborations with other scientists, to solve complex pollinator crisis through chemistry science spray drift reduction technologies; (6) Provide scientific and technical leadership to develop innovative concepts, strategies and methodologies to protect bees and pollinators due to spray drift and off-target losses from pesticide applications; (7) Develop and utilize techniques such as liquid chromatography- and/or gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS, GC-MS) to analyze pesticide concentrations; and (8) Interpret and report results of research in scientific papers and is recognized as an authority in his/her area of research by scientific papers.
