Assistant Professor of Organic Chemistry

Full-time, Tenure Track Position

THE UNIVERSITY OF MAINE

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Maine (Orono, ME) invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in organic chemistry, anticipated to begin August 30, 2021. The position will be a joint appointment between Chemistry and the Frontier Institute for Research in Sensor Technologies (FIRST). The ideal candidate will utilize the advanced facilities at CORE (https://umaine.edu/core/) and FIRST to develop convergent cross-disciplinary research and educational programs overlapping Chemistry and FIRST.  Review of applications will begin on April 16, 2021 and continue until the position is filled. 

Qualifications. The position requires a Ph.D. in organic chemistry or closely related discipline by start date of appointment. Applicants should have expertise in organic chemistry or chemical biology which relates to sensor technology.

Responsibilities. The successful candidate will be expected to (1) develop an innovative, independent research program supported by external funding and disseminated through scholarly publications that aligns with the missions of Chemistry, FIRST, and other research programs at the University of Maine, (2) mentor and train undergraduate and graduate students, (3) teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in organic chemistry, contribute to a graduate certificate program in advanced materials and sensor systems, and teach other courses as needed, (4) participate in curriculum development which includes development of graduate courses in their specialty, (5) demonstrate commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion and (6) have effective communication skills. Service to the department, college, and university is also expected.
