Job Title:  Color & Quality Control Chemist

Location:  IPS Adhesives, Durham, NC. 

Reports to:  Lead Plant Chemist, Research and Development

About the Position:

The Color and Quality Control Chemist, under general supervision, develops color formulations specific to customer specifications, conducts QC in-process and final QC testing of both solid surface and structural products. Determines batch adjustments utilizing lab blends, accepted guidelines and/or using batch history.

The work involves the execution of specific instruction or procedures and typically comprises a complete segment of work, i.e. color development, testing, adhesive formulation or experimental projects of broader scope.  The work product or service affects the accuracy, reliability or acceptability of further processes or services.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develops new adhesive colors for the surfacing industry as needed by customers
  • Reformulates pigment blends to improve quality, cost or environmental compliance
  • Operates and tends equipment for generating batch results; make decisions regarding pass/fail, continued processing, and batch adjustments based on results
  •  Precisely weights, measures and checks critical raw materials stored and issued to manufacturing from the QC lab.
  • Records data on official OC test forms and enters data in electronic database; completes and files paper documents of QC results.
  • Insures QC testing samples are "conditioned" to proper temperatures for specified tests.
  • Maintains laboratory equipment, utensils and apparatus in good working condition.

  • Follows ISO 9001 procedures and recommends improvements. Completes documentation accurately and completely.
  • Investigates claims about non-conforming product if they arise.
  • Reports maintenance defects, operational errors, or defective equipment to immediate Supervisor.
  • Through lab testing, assists in qualifying/validating new raw materials; conducts specified incomeing raw material QC test.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • For year college degree in Chemistry, Materials Science or Vo Tech or equivalent work experience 
  • 1 to 3 years of related industrial lab experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Color matching to customer applications in coatings or plastics industries highly preferred.
