Job Details

The University of Pikeville (UPIKE) is seeking applicants for a full-time, nine-month visiting faculty appointment in the field of biochemistry starting August 2021 for the 2021-2022 academic year. Rank and salary will be based on qualifications. All applicants must have a strong commitment to teaching in a small university setting and the ability to work effectively with others in a collegial environment dedicated to student learning.

The successful candidate will teach biochemistry I and II, develop and teach a biochemistry laboratory course, and participate in teaching other courses in the chemistry curriculum. Candidates that are prepared to teach organic chemistry and/or associated labs are preferred.  A master’s degree in biochemistry or chemistry is required. Candidates with degrees in closely related fields will be considered and should address their biochemistry experience in their cover letter.  Prior undergraduate teaching experience is preferred. 

Other responsibilities:

  1. Create and maintain an environment that is conducive to innovative teaching and active learning.
  2. Emphasize broadly trained skills and a strong passion for excellence in teaching, service, and scholarship.
  3. Develop, communicate, and fulfill effective course learning outcomes.
  4. Teach courses utilizing no-cost course materials and Open Educational Resources (OERs).
  5. Compose and publish syllabi containing the items listed in the approved syllabus rubric.
  6. Teaching courses for both majors and non-majors.
  7. As assigned and in consultation with the area chair, advise students, provide service to the University community, and assist with divisional activities.
  8. Ability to instruct classes using face-to-face, hybrid, and fully online modalities.
  9. Establish mutual respect with students through effective and timely communication including expectations, deadlines, and feedback on work completed.
  10. Maintain good working relationships with faculty and administration in all academic and non-academic sectors.
  11. Communicate effectively with constituents within the University, surrounding community, and State regarding the University.
  12. Utilize the Learning Management System (LMS) to support classroom instruction.

Relationships:  Position requires daily contact with co-workers, supervisor, students, faculty, and staff in order to disseminate necessary information and coordinate for daily operations.

Education/Skill Requirements:

  • A master’s degree in biochemistry or chemistry is required and a doctorate in biochemistry is preferred. Applicants with ABD status and within one year of completion will also be considered.
  • Undergraduate teaching experience is desired.
  • Minimum required English language skills are at the C1 level based on the Common European Language Framework.
