Job Title: Applied Chemist (Research Associate)

Location: Livestock Biosystems Research Unit at the USDA, ARS, U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC), Clay Center, NE

Duties:  A postdoctoral position is immediately available focused on developing a treatment process to remove pharmaceuticals and other environmentally active compounds from wastewater. The research will include the use of biding agents targeting broad classes of contaminants that facilitate their removal from agricultural wastewater. Further research will investigate the potential of chemically pretreating wastewater to enhance removal by the developed treatment process, and the use of polymer coating of binding agents to expand the types of compounds removed from wastewater. Finally, the research will evaluate efficacy of this treatment methods for mitigating the release of pharmaceuticals, pharmaceutical metabolites and other environmentally active compounds to the environment resulting from wastewater disposal.

Qualifications Required: The applicant must be a U.S. citizen and have earned a Ph.D. degree with in the last four years. The research assignment requires knowledge of biochemistry, chemistry, and statistical methods.  The USDA is an equal opportunity provider and employer.

About the Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC):

There are over 40 scientists at USMARC working in five research units (Genetics and Breeding; Animal Health; Meat Safety & Quality; Nutrition, Growth, and Physiology; Livestock Biosystems) to develop scientific information and new technology to solve high priority problems for U.S. livestock industries. Research approaches involve multidisciplinary teams with emphasis on both short-term and long-term solutions. The program is cooperative with the University of Nebraska and land-grant universities in the U.S.  There are 8 scientists and 7 support staff in the Livestock Biosystems Research Unit (LBRU).  The mission of the LBRU is to develop new knowledge, technology and strategic approaches for improvement and optimization of biological systems, production efficiencies and environmental sustainability of sheep, cattle, and swine production.
