The Mission of the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) is to educate, and graduate leaders of exemplary character who are inspired to serve the national security, marine transportation, and economic needs of the United States as licensed Merchant Marine Officers and commissioned officers in the Armed Forces. The Academy, one of the five Federal Academies, is a degree granting institution fully accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Upon graduation, the Midshipmen (male and female) are awarded Bachelor of Science degrees, licensed as Merchant Marine Officers by the U.S. Coast Guard and are commissioned as Officers in the U.S. Reserves or Active Duty Military Service. Located on the North Shore of Long Island in Western Nassau County, it is one of the world’s foremost institutions in the field of maritime education and consists of 82 acres of waterfront land including a Museum, library and fitness/recreational facilities available to both faculty and staff.
POSITION INFO: Adjunct/Part Time/Intermittent Instructor
Federal Government Excepted Service appointment with an Initial Term Not-To-Exceed 13 months; however, each year with a satisfactory performance appraisal, the appointment may be extended for an additional year. The position is that of an Adjunct Chemistry Instructor in the Department of Mathematics & Science, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, N.Y.
The individual will tutor for and/or teach the General Chemistry and Chemistry for Marine Engineers courses. Permanent assignments will be to conduct Chemistry tutoring sessions twice/week during evening hours in every trimester. In the first trimester of academic year 2021-22 (starting July 28, 2021), there will only be the tutoring assignment. In later trimesters, as staffing needs dictate, there may be assignments to teach Chemistry courses (lecture and lab) during daytime hours.
You must have a minimum of a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in an applicable subject area and a minimum of a year of college teaching or tutoring experience. Applicable subject areas include, but are not limited to, Chemistry and Biochemistry.
