The National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL),  Materials Engineering & Manufacturing Directorate (MEM), Functional Materials Team is recruiting for multiple senior level research positions aimed at the development of materials targeted for specific applications to enable (a) production of clean energy from fossil fuels and (b) carbon management.
Research experience is required in one or more of the following areas:

Senior Synthetic Chemist

  • Expertise in inorganic synthesis, specifically, ZIFs, MOFs, carbon nanotubes, carbon materials, perovskites, catalyst materials, nanomaterials, other sensor materials, and electro-ceramics.
  •  Expertise in polymer/organic materials to be used as coatings, sensing, or separations materials. Polymers could be used in a mixed matrix configuration so understanding of interactions with inorganic compounds is necessary.
  • Demonstrated success obtaining funding from external organizations and demonstrated expertise in advancing technologies toward eventual commercialization.
  • Candidate would oversee all synthetic operations within FMT and be capable of leading new synthetic methodology development.

Separations Materials or Sensor Materials Expert

  • Expertise in development of materials for carbon management, specifically carbon capture including solvent, sorbent, and membrane approaches. Reactive capture, direct air capture, pre-combustion capture, and post-combustion capture are of interest
  • Expertise in development of sensors (including interrogation techniques) and sensor materials with emphasis on distributed fiber optic sensors and remote sensing capabilities such as surface acoustic wave-based sensors.
  •  Candidate will be expected to take a leadership role in the Sensors Materials group and/or Capture group.
  • Demonstrated success obtaining funding from external organizations and demonstrated expertise in advancing technologies toward eventual commercialization.

Senior Materials Scientist

  • Expertise in development of materials for novel technologies in support of clean energy production from fossil fuel sources and carbon management.
  •  Demonstrated success in obtaining external funding, establishing industrial partnerships, and transitioning technologies to commercialization.
  • Demonstrated expertise in developing and growing a research group from the ground up.
  •  Candidate will develop concepts, obtain funding for those concepts, form a research group to execute the research, and ultimately transition the developed technologies to industry.
