Located in Victoria, British Columbia on Vancouver Island, close to Vancouver and Seattle, the Department of Chemistry at the University of Victoria invites applications for a Senior Laboratory Instructor. 

The Department of Chemistry offers multiple undergraduate and graduate degree programs, and its members conduct internationally recognized research in chemistry. It runs a full program of courses in chemistry designed for students intending to major in the field, as well as courses for students in a range of other programs. The Department utilizes a range of laboratories to provide experiential learning and research opportunities in chemistry courses. The Department fosters a culture of student engagement and success.

The Senior Lab Instructor (SLI) supports all components of the undergraduate chemistry laboratory curriculum in synthetic chemistry, including preparation and development of experimental content, preparing the Teaching Assistants (TAs) to teach and grade the work of the undergraduate students, teaching or tutoring those undergraduates, safety training, record management,  maintenance of the teaching and working environment of the associated space and facilities, the maintenance of the chemical inventory and departmental engagement. This position is the topic-specialist instructor of record for the upper (200/300/400) level stand-alone credit lab courses plus the primary instructor for the lab/tutorial component in 200-level topic courses. The SLI collaborates on laboratory curriculum development with Faculty Instructors assigned in an advisory capacity to the specific course(s).

This is a continuing position.  Only those that hold Canadian Citizenship or Permanent Residency are eligible to work in continuing positions.


  • This position requires MSc in Chemistry in synthetic chemistry plus a minimum of 3 years work experience in a scientific environment and teaching experience; a PhD in synthetic chemistry is preferred.

In addition, this position requires:


  • Experience with and expertise in a broad range synthetic chemistry experimental techniques.
  • Excellent analytical, critical thinking and problem solving skills.
  • Experience teaching undergraduate students in a classroom and/or laboratory setting.
  • Superior communication skills, both written and verbal, demonstrating diplomacy, integrity and tact in all interactions.
  • Demonstrated ability or potential to create new and innovative laboratory experiments.
  • A variety of computer skills related to teaching and experimental synthetic chemistry.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks in stressful circumstances.
  • Ability to build and maintain productive working relationships.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability or potential to manage a team of people.
  • Ability to manage and maintain laboratory equipment and chemical inventory.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse population of students and university personnel.
